• Tuesday Learnshop - An Evening with Emory Jurors Teri Darnell and John Mariana

We are very fortunate to have the juror/judges for SPS’s 2020 Atlanta Celebrates Photography Exhibition, currently showing in the Atrium Gallery at Emory University Hospital Midtown, leading our October Learnshop. Teri Darnell and John Mariana will be discussing the qualities they were seeking when choosing photographs for the exhibition, then providing constructive feedback on specific member images that did not make it into the show. This will be a great opportunity to learn by hearing two artists analyze individual photographs in regard to technical proficiency, composition and impact. (Photographers whose images are being used for the critique have given specific permission for their images to be reviewed.) You will definitely want to take advantage of this rare opportunity to get into the minds of two very experienced judges as they talk about the qualities they look for in evaluating images for an exhibition or competition! As always, the link for this Learnshop will be emailed approximately 24 hours before the event to everyone who RSVP’s for the event on Meetup. [Photo by David Woolf] ****************************************************************************** SPS has three standing meetings each month for its members and guests. The First Friday meeting features an outside speaker and a competition. While competition entries at these monthly meetings are restricted to currently paid-up members, we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography to attend. The Learnshops (fourth Tuesdays) and Coffee & Critique (second Saturdays) are intended for members, but again, we welcome visitors. If you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the rental of the facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member! • Coffee & Critique - Virtual Edition

    Online event

Join us for another “virtual edition” of SPS’s monthly Coffee & Critique! Regulars know that we meet every month to share images and provide constructive feedback to each other on how to improve our photography. We normally alternate each month between digital and print critiques, and the meetings are for newcomers and seasoned photographers alike. During this period of “social distancing,” though, we are conducting our monthly C&C meetings online until it is safe to meet again in person. Because of the online format, participation is limited to 100 people. In addition, you must RSVP on the MeetUp site to attend because only folks who RSVP will be sent the link needed to join the meeting. For these online C&C’s, participants may submit up to two images each for feedback. (A “before” and “after” pair of images will only count as one submission for those who want to “show their work.”) Please size your images as you would for an SPS competition — see instructions here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17-daV-kW5-6riHRLTGj_u3GaNTTm23eB/view ******Please Note: Because of time constraints, we will accept images for critique from no more than 35 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. When we reach 35, I will send an email letting everyone know we have maxed out on submissions. Even if you don’t submit images, though, we encourage you to join and participate in the MeetUp. Our experience is that the critiques are a valuable learning experience even for folks who don’t submit images.****** Submissions must be emailed to [masked] no later than 8:00 pm on the Thursday before the meeting. Please put “critique” in the subject line. I will acknowledge receipt of submissions, so if you don’t hear back from me, it means I didn’t get your images. Your images should be titled with your name and a number showing the sequence of the submissions — e.g., JaneDoe1, JaneDoe2 — with the number reflecting the order in which your images will be shown. If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me. • Go with the Flow - with Eric Bowles

    Online event

Go with the Flow – Tips for Photographing Water in Nature We’ve all seen great images of streams, rivers and oceans. What makes those images successful? What equipment is useful in photographing water? How do you choose the right camera settings to make great images? Whether it’s a puddle, a few drops, or a rushing stream, most of us like the character water brings to nature images. We’ll discuss examples of water in photographs and explore equipment, camera settings and compositions that you can use. Eric Bowles is an Atlanta-based nature photographer specializing in the southeastern states.
