Surrey Data Platform Group - May: Production SQL Server on Docker
Details
Come along and join us for the Surrey Data Platform Group meetup for May Guildford with 2 great sessions planned and of course as usual drinks and buffet food will be provided by us!
Details:
We'll be following the usual agenda - a quick update about the group, general announcements and PASS news. Followed by the two sessions from our guest speakers, James Anderson & Jonathan Jones!
Session 1: Would You Run Production SQL Server on Docker? - James Anderson
With the advent of Windows containers and SQL Server on Linux, the options for running SQL Server are growing. Should you run SQL Server on physical machines, virtualised, in the cloud or do you get with the cool kids and run it on docker?
We all know that docker is great for dev testing and stateless apps, but would you run your production SQL Server on it?
It sounds crazy to run your data tier in ephemeral containers, but I'll discuss the reasons why this might be a good idea if we can figure out the following challenges: Data persistence, Security, High Availability, Licensing Monitoring and Deploying SQL Server updates
James' Bio:
James Anderson is a Data Engineer in Southampton, UK. He has been working with databases since 2008. The first and worst RDBMS he worked with was Paradox. He quickly moved to using T-SQL in SQL Server 2005 and has worked on every version of the product since. His work ranges from stand-alone systems for simple websites to multi terabyte HA environments that support thousands of sites across Europe.
Session 2: DAX Calculation Groups - Jonathan Jones
Jon will be discussing DAX Calculation Groups. Calculation Groups are reusable calculations that can be applied to measures and values. By using calculation groups, we can reduce the number of measures to present an uncluttered user interface for end-users. Currently, Calculation Groups are part of the CTP release for SQL Server 2019; Calculation Groups will eventually be available for PowerBI and Azure Analysis Services.
Would be great to see you there, and, as always, get in touch if you'd like to speak at an upcoming event!
