The historical roots of statistics and computing that lead to the development of the SAS language start at the Rothamsted Experimental Station with Sir Ronald Fisher. This model of agricultural statistics spread to America and eventually to North Carolina State University. It was at NCSU that Tony Barr started working in statistical programming. The inspiration, people, and milestones in the development of the SAS language are presented.
