Data & the Physical World: GIS and More

Details

About the Topic:

A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. With this unique capability, GIS reveals deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations—helping users make smarter decisions.

In this MeetUp, we will learn about geographical data applications and their uses including:

  • Maltego: a software used for open-source intelligence and forensics.
  • Wigle.net: is a website that consolidates location and other data on wireless networks around the world.
  • QGIS: a free and open-source cross-platform desktop geographic information system application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data.
  • ArcGIS: a geographic information system for working with maps and geographic information maintained by the Environmental Systems Research Institute.

About the Speakers:

Brooke Safferman
Brooke fell in love with technology because it can be used to make the world a safer, better place. In fact, giving back to society through volunteering is a high priority for her, as she is currently a member of the Digital Forensics, Darkweb Intelligence, and Blockchain Intelligence teams for the Anti-Human Trafficking Intelligence Initiative; a member of the OSINT, Investigations, and Object Analysis & Identification teams for the National Child Protection Task Force; a Senior Judge for Trace Labs CTF Missing Persons Hackathon events; and a Crisis Counselor for Crisis Text Line. Brooke is currently a remote Master of Science degree candidate in Cybersecurity at the University of Maine at Augusta, focusing on her greatest passions in the field – intelligence, cyber investigations, and digital forensics – and is probably covered in cat hair right now, considering her favorite study buddy is her feline fur-baby. If you have similar interests (or a lint roller she could borrow!), please feel free to reach out at any time.

Daniel Fernandez
Senior Product Manager at DomainTools. In his current role, he leads the efforts to augment internally developed and third-party threat intelligent data sources, deliver agile data processing, and the data strategy that powers DomainTool's vision to map the internet's infrastructure. Daniel is particularly interested in data security, data privacy, and large-scale data processing. He is currently a graduate student in Cybersecurity at the Georgia Institute of Technology focusing on the intersection of data analytics and information security
