What we're about

SWIGGIS is a professional and social organization. Our meetings provide women geographers with a positive and productive space as well as a supportive and engaging environment in which we mentor each other, enhance our intellectual climate, and are innovative in our strategies to promote the professional status of women in Geography and GIS. Our goal is to meet monthly, and our meetings will be scheduled alternatively as educational sessions and social happy hours.

Social Hours are available to everyone, but workshop Professional Development events are open to active SWIGGIS Members only.

[External] Centex Mapathon - North Austin

Brentwood Social House

Join us for the monthly CenTex Mapathon to contribute to an OpenStreetMap project or recruit someone for your own. This event occurs every last Sunday of the month. Topic: OpenStreetMap or recruit people for your own project. OpenStreetMap is an opensource community using aerial imagery. Our topic for the month will be based on need. We will evaluate what is needed in the community prior to the event. OpenStreetMap is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world. Local Knowledge - OpenStreetMap emphasizes local knowledge. Contributors use aerial imagery, GPS devices, and low-tech field maps to verify that OSM is accurate and up to date. Community Driven - OpenStreetMap's community is diverse, passionate, and growing every day. Our contributors include enthusiast mappers, GIS professionals, engineers running the OSM servers, humanitarians mapping disaster-affected areas, and many more. Open Data - OpenStreetMap is open data: you are free to use it for any purpose as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors. If you alter or build upon the data in certain ways, you may distribute the result only under the same license. What to do before the event: Register for the event on URISA TX's website Create an OpenStreetMap account Watch these how-to videos Read about volunteering with HOT Register for slack #disaster channel: https://slack.hotosm.org (takes about a day to process) Sign in to the HOT Tasking Manager with your OpenStreetMap account After getting you connected to the OpenStreetMap community, if you don't already have an account, we will work on examples together. Volunteers will be available for assistance. On the day of the event, please bring your own laptop, and introductions will be made from the respective representative for each project. Please note: If you would like to recruit people for your own project, please contact us so we can get you on the list. Location: Brentwood Social House, family friendly location with playground More information can be found here: https://www.hotosm.org/what-we-do https://www.missingmaps.org/ https://www.giscorps.org/hot-projects/ For future notifications regarding OSM Mapathons you can sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/atxmapathon Audience: This meetup is open to all ages and abilities.
