Hi Christie,

I'd love to get involved with this exhibit. Sounds like it'll be fun! Plus I've been interested in knitting with plastic bags for a while, just never got around to it. Can you forward me the pdf?

Subject: [San-Diego-Central-Knitters] New Children's Museum

I got contacted my Teresa Grame from the New Children’s Museum contacted me regarding their new exhibit. Their new exhibit needs knitters/crocheters to knit/crochet out of plastic. If anyone is interested let me know and I will forward you the pdf she sent me regarding the project.
This is what she sent me:
I am an intern with The New Children’s Museum, Downtown San Diego. Lauren Popp, the assistant curator, will be presenting an informational session on September 3rd from 10-11 am. (Please note that the original message said 11am -12, which is incorrect). I am the contact for the project. The New Children’s Museum is opening a new exhibition in October, 2011 focusing on trash. More information on the exhibit can be found at Please also see the attached handout on the project.
We are inviting knitting groups to become involved in contributing to new community project created by Margaret Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring. She is is known for her Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project. She is creating a related project for New Children’s Museum called “The Midden,” constructed entirely from strips of plastic bags and then crocheted or knitted into forms. The goal of the project is to bring attention to the impact of plastic on the oceans. The theme of the piece will be marine forms, but participants are open to create any forms desired. Knitting groups that are interested in participating are invited to attend an informational session at the New Children’s Museum, located at 200 West Island Ave. San Diego, CA 92101 on Saturday, September 3rd from 10-11am. The session will be followed by a knitting/crocheting session in the museum space. The museum will also offer space to host knitting groups the following Saturday, September 10th between 10-4pm and then again on an on-going basis during the exhibition beginning October 15th. The exhibition will run two years. Artists who contribute to the piece will be credited in the exhibition. There is an opportunity for knitters to continue creating contributions throughout September and throughout the exhibition. The initial exhibit contributions will be due by October 1st for installation in order to be shown at the opening. I am attaching a “How To” informational packet on the project which describes the
process for creating the string from plastic bags. If you cannot attend either of the two Saturday sessions at the museum, you can use the How to Guide to make your own pieces throughout the month of September and I will obtain the pieces from you to place in the exhibition. Please contact Teresa Grame for more information or to RSVP to the informational session at[masked]-1465. Thank you so much for your time,
Teresa Grame, Intern, Exhibitions[masked]
