October Discussion--Women and Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny

  • Oct 22, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Author: Suze Orman.

NOTE: This book appears to be downloadable for FREE (yay!), all over the web. Here's one link (but I think this link requires you to have a Google log in)https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cfs.purdue.edu%2Frichardfeinberg%2Fcsr%2520309%2520spring%25202011%2Forman%2Fsuze_orman_eng.pdf

Join us for our monthly book group discussion.  We meet at 6:30, chat, start introductions at 6:45 and begin talking about the discussion questions.

***PLEASE bring book suggestions for January (the 4th Tuesday in December is Xmas Eve, so we'll be skipping it.) The topic for January is women and medicine.***

We finish the discussion around 8:10, collect donations for Meetup fees and then we pick the book to read two months in advance.

re: meeting location, we'll send an email a few days before to all who've RSVP'd yes that exact address. We don't post it when we do meet there because it's a private residence. If we have more than a dozen people RSVP'ing, we usually rent out the room at Progressive Health Services in University Heights.

Hey ladies, just wanted to let you know that even though I couldn't come to the meeting I've been reading this book and it inspired me to ask for a promotion at work! My boss was pretty agreeable but she has to approach her boss about it, so I don't know anything yet but it's the first time in my life I actually asked for something at work.

Her line about not putting yourself "on sale" really hit home for me. Just wanted to share that little win with you all!

Some discussion ideas: 1) Is educating women about money a feminist act? How does this fit into the long history of patriarchical inheritance of property and wealth? Just how prevalent is that economic paradigm anyway?

    2) Is Orman a feminist? If so, how? (Back to Q#1)

    3) How well does her format for disseminating her info work? (Books and TV shows for the "layman".) 4) How well does our society do in terms of educating women about money and how it relates to power? To people in general?

    5) Is Orman's sexuality a factor in the discussion on how she influences people/ her audience? Do you care about her personal life? Does "coming out" matter as much as it used to for public figures, and can that action be considered feminist for a woman?

I should have added: what about her list of eight attributes to foster wealth (they surprised me)? And the concept of seeking yourself short?

      Selling yourself short...

Arg, had a scheduling conflict :(

I'm dying to come to one of these meetings! I'm enjoying the book so far, it's giving me the confidence to think about the ways that I'm "putting myself on sale" and how to change it. I wish I could make this discussion, I'd love to here what everyone else thinks.
