San Diego Sheriff’s Sergeant Craig Johnson and Child Abuse Detective Ali Perez were ambushed in the east county community of Lakeside, California on September 25, 2012. Johnson and Perez were attempting to contact and arrest a suspect for molesting his girlfriend’s two young daughters. Johnson and Perez were shot by the assailant with a high-powered rifle. Sergeant Johnson was struck in the arm and shoulder area. Johnson was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home. Detective Perez was struck in the shoulder and abdomen. Detective Perez faces a long road ahead of him. It is unknown if or when he will return to work. This tragic incident has been a financial hardship for the Perez family, including his two children in college.
Perez enjoyed riding his motorcycle along the coast in San Diego County. Detective Perez’s colleagues and friends welcome the opportunity to raise donations for the Perez family during this difficult time. All proceeds from the Benefit ride will go to the “Detective Ali Perez Support Fund.” that the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (DSA) set up for the Perez family through the San Diego County Credit Union. The ride will conclude with a barbeque at the DSA offices. Raffle and poker hand winners will be given donated prizes so all the money donated can go to the support fund.
