There are several data analytics and data science interest groups out there. But, this group is DIFFERENT. In this group, we do a "10,000" meters deep-dive into the WORLD OF RETAILING (defined broadly, to include Internet and brick-and-mortar stores, and also logistics and transportation to distribute those products and services to the end consumers) using data and data analytics to solve any retailing related problems (even tangentially related, for example, smart cities operations). Some of these problems can include what assortment to offer in the online and offline channels (assortment decisions), whether to implement home delivery and/or store pickup/locker delivery services (last-mile delivery decisions), the role and impact in-store technologies (store ambience decisions), where to locate a physical store (inventory-carrying or showroom with zero inventory facility) in a market and how big (e.g. sq. ft.) should it be (accessibility decisions), and the types of inventory replenishment contracts to deploy in the stores to ensure a specific service level (availability decisions). Omnichannel retailing and last-mile delivery innovations are buzzwords today, but what do they entail for retailers and for researchers? Do we need to do things differently? If so, how?
Everyone is welcome, whether you are an industry practitioner working in a retail firm, a researcher, a student, or simply someone who wants to know more about the retailing world. One of the goals of this group is to match researchers with practitioners (and companies) to collaborate on research projects. Through this outlet, for example, a company (or individual) sponsors a data set, and we have researchers/scientists bid on these projects, and then identify problems of mutual interest to both parties using the sponsored data. Of course, non-disclosure agreement (NDA) can be arranged if this is a requirement. Project members will then provide regular updates on the progress of the work during our meetings. On other occasions, we exchange views about what we see in the retail landscape, the current challenges, and emerging trends. We can also develop educational materials as a collaborative effort for the community.
I warmly welcome you to be a pioneer member of this group and to contribute to our forward agenda. Feel free to join our channel on Slack for the latest information: https://sd-retail-analytics.slack.com .
