Intro to Data Modeling in Power BI with Marco Russo
Marco Russo is an internationally known Microsoft MVP, Consultant & Mentor. He will be in San Francisco in early October to teach a 3-day DAX workshop and speak to our group. Marco will introduce the basic principles of data modeling for analytics. He'll discuss several scenarios where the data model makes a difference. This will clarify what makes a model “right” or “wrong” and why spending enough time up front to design the right data model will greatly pay off when coding. The examples are based on Power BI models that will be explained during the demos and will be available after the session. The demos will clarify concepts such as normalization and denormalization, facts and dimensions, and star schemas. There are also practical examples of common data models such as Header-Detail for invoice/orders that should be transformed in a regular star schema to avoid a number of issues in reporting. You will learn: * How to properly structure a data model to simplify DAX code and improve performance. * Practical examples of bad and good design. * Terms used in data modeling to be able to read documentation and article on this topic. * The next steps to study and begin to apply the concepts to your data models. Marco Russo is a business intelligence consultant and mentor. He has written several books about Power BI, Analysis Service, and Power Pivot. He also regularly writes articles and white papers that are available on Marco is a Microsoft MVP and an SSAS Maestro, the highest level of certification in Microsoft Analysis Services. Today, Marco focuses his time with SQLBI customers, traveling extensively to train and consult on DAX and data modeling for Power BI and Analysis Services. He also teaches public classes worldwide and speaks at international conferences such as Microsoft Ignite, PASS Summit, and Sqlbits. While Marco is in San Francisco, he is putting on a three-day Mastering DAX Workshop. More information on this can be found at Contact Mark Ginnebaugh for a discount code that will save you over $450 for this workshop.
