Dallas Buyers Club (2013) Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto

DARE TO LIVE

"Loosely based on the true-life tale of Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, a drug taking, women loving, homophobic man who, in 1986, was diagnosed with full blown HIV/AIDS and given thirty days to live."

"Follows the story of his battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies, after being diagnosed, and his search for alternative treatments that helped established a way in which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies."

Some of what critics are saying:

"'Dallas Buyers Club' takes audiences back to the worst of the AIDS crisis, where the disease was a death sentence, and the public's terror and hostility were at its height."

"A solid biopic is made transcendent by McConaughey, who shed nearly 50 pounds and deserves to gain an Oscar for his ferocious, funny performance.   I wouldn't be surprised if McConaughey and Leto get Academy Award nominations for their performances in this film."

"... unrelievedly downbeat, but provides McConaughey with his juiciest role yet, that of a good ol' boy hustler/AIDS advocate ... Leto can start honing his Oscar acceptance speech. He's that good."

Matthew McConaughey lost 50lbs for his role, Jared Leto lost 30 lbs and their acting is being called "transformative". Getting rave reviews for both the film itself as well as Oscar-level performances by both actors...'Dallas Buyers Club' is also getting a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Don't miss what's being hailed as some of the best acting of 2013.

Absolutely fantastic. A lot's been said about the acting being terrific but the storytelling itself only being ok...but f**k that. No...this isn't a Kubrick-level film in terms of storytelling or direction but it was perfect for what it was and what it was supposed to be.

As for the acting...there's been, of course, Oscar talk for both McConaughey and Leto for these roles...and both are definitely in that realm. Yes, they both lost an insane amount of weight for their portrayals (McConaughey 50lbs and Leto 30lbs) but their acting itself was strong enough to make them contenders alone. Between the two...I think Leto was the even more amazing performance...in fully developing and becoming "Rayon". He absolutely has to be nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar...and...has a terrific chance of taking it.

    Definitely go see this!

Loved the film. Mathew M. was amazing. I love when he reaches in deep..he seems to be able to delve into characters when he chooses. Jared Leto was astonishing. I have to admit that I'm not familiar with any of his other works, but in this, he was great. Fascinating that, politically speaking, health care wise, it still rings true with bells a-fire. Especially now...and I'm sure it's not coincidental.

Hi Robb, I've already seen this movie and highly recommend it. I know this is personal opinion, but I liked it better than Philadelphia. To me, Dallas Buyers... is richer in terms of story, characters, actors' performance.

I had hoped to get to this on opening day...but the SD Asian and Arab film festivals foiled that plan. ;)
