What we're about

The goal of the Santa Barbara Data Science Meetup is to gather professionals, academics, and practitioners around problems concerning the acquisition, analysis, and visualization of data---something that has been recently deemed the sexiest job of the century (http://hbr.org/2012/10/data-scientist-the-sexiest-job-of-the-21st-century/).

This group is meant to complement the excellent Santa Barbara R Users Group (https://www.meetup.com/Santa-Barbara-R-Users-Group/), with the goal to extend its audience beyond R users.

Initially, the meetup will follow the steps, and topics, of more established groups (https://www.meetup.com/Data-Mining/) with a similar focus, possibly by drawing from the same pool of speakers.

In the lulls between meetups and Kaggle competitions (http://www.kaggle.com/) a fresh source of data-related buzz can be found on the newborn DataTau (http://www.datatau.com/).
