What we're about

The following COVID-19 protocols for Sierra Club Outings have been incorporated to help ensure the health and safety of our volunteers, participants and staff. These are subject to change based upon CDC and Sierra Club guidance. We thank-you in advance for your patience and assistance.

  • To reduce contact, sign-up for outings and complete the participant agreement in advance at https://www.riograndesierraclub.org/calendar/
  • If you’ve signed-up for an outing or event and begin to feel ill, please stay home and seek appropriate medical care.
  • There are potentially participants who are vaccinated and unvaccinated and it’s each participants choice to attend or not attend the outing with this knowledge.
  • No vaccine or test results are required and participants will not be required to disclose their vaccination or test status.
  • Participants are welcome to wear masks if it makes them comfortable. Masks will be required if there’s an indoor component to the outing, while they are indoors. Masks are also required at all times for ICO outings participants, and in some other cases where minor children are participating.
  • If you should begin to feel ill or experience symptoms associated with COVID-19, during or after a Sierra Club outing, contact the Outings Leader so that they can notify other participants and club leadership for contract tracing purposes.

Welcome to Santa Fe Sierra Club Outings! We sponsor hikes and outings year round. Hikes and outings are free and open to the public. You need not be a member of the Sierra Club to participate (though of course we'd like you to join).
Our Northern Group puts out a weekly e-mail Sierra Trail Mix that is a 1-page report of last week's outings, upcoming outings, and miscellaneous other items of non-Sierra Club events. To get on our outings listserve send an email to Listserv@lists.sierraclub.org with any subject and a message that says SUBSCRIBE RIO-NORTH-OUTINGS.

3 Mile Snowshoe loop from the Coyote Call Trailhead

MarketStreet/Albertsons DeVargas (NOT the entry side)

This is a relatively easy snowshoe of a loop on old logging roads at the Coyote Call trailhead across from the Valle Grande at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Mostly uphill on the first half and downhill on the second half. We'll stop at the mid-point for a rest and lunch. Total round-trip distance is 3 miles with about 450 feet of elevation gain. Its about an hour drive to that trailhead from Santa Fe.

The driving distance is about 36 miles round-trip with a suggested carpool reimbursement of $4 per rider.
Due to the new wave of Covid, one option is to caravan from the meeting place to the trailhead. If you want to carpool you will be have to OK conditions (face mask, vaccination status) with the driver.

A reminder about signing up for this hike or any of our outings: if after signing up you cannot go, please update your GOING to NOT GOING here on Meetup as soon as possible and not the morning before we leave to allow those on the waiting list to join. After multiple NO SHOWS you won't be allowed to go along on future outings.

Mystery Hike II. 6+ miles with elevation

Albertsons Market

Bring your curiosity to the Mystery Hike II.

Please read the full description before signing up for this hike.

While 6 miles on the flat may be comfortable for you, this hike will include some steep up hill sections, as well as steep downhill sections.
The trail is mostly smooth, but in the sections mentioned above there is quite a lot of loose rock. The high points of this hike may include wind, but the views will be great. The last stretch of the trail will skirt some peaks, so is a rolling terrain back to the cars.

The weather looks like it will be beautiful and cool. We'll take a "snack/lunch" stop, so bring along your favorite trail food. I also recommend hiking poles, sturdy shoes, and at least a liter of water.
As always, please bring enough layers of clothing to assure comfort.

We will meet in Santa Fe and caravan to the trailhead. Due to increased covid concerns, carpooling will be optional. There is adequate parking for many cars, so everyone can have their comfort levels accommodated.

Please no dogs on this hike.

Moderate hike to Otowi Peak

MarketStreet/Albertsons DeVargas (NOT the entry side)

Looks like dry weather and moderate temperatures should make this one possible.
Moderate hike to Otowi Peak west of the Santa Fe. This hike has some steep and rocky sections as it climbs Buckman Mesa. Good views from the top and a tiny detour to a large volcanic vent. Total round-trip distance is 5 miles with about 1,100 feet of elevation gain.

The driving distance is about 36 miles round-trip with a suggested carpool reimbursement of $4 per rider.
