After two successful meetups under our belts, we’re excited to be holding a third event on the 23rd November.
For our upcoming meetup, we’re being hosted by our friends at ITV, and we’ll be hearing from their own Martin Carolan, who will be giving an intriguingly named talk called 'FlatMappy Bird: functional flappy bird'.
We’re also joined by Norbert Radyk, Scala Development Lead at Moneyfarm, who will be discussing how to apply Scala to a start-up environment.
We will also have an exciting final talk from Stefano Bonetti, Senior Software Developer at Sky, who will be explaining Back-pressure with Akka-Streams and Akka-HTTP.
The agenda for the evening will be as follows:
6:30pm: Arrive and drinks
7pm: Martin Carolan - Senior Software Engineer, ITV
Title: flatMappy Bird: functional flappy bird
Remember that simple yet addictive game from 2014 where a pixelated bird had to avoid crashing into a plagiarised image of a pipe?
In this talk, you will learn how to model it as a pure function, and hopefully not get addicted to it all over again!
7.20pm: Norbert Radyk - Scala Development Lead, Moneyfarm
Title: Successful startup in Scala
Inspired by over 5 years of Scala experience, I will talk about the major challenges faced when applying Scala in the corporate, open-source and startup world, with a primary focus on the last one. Starting from high-level concepts and building up to low-level code snippets, I will illustrate how the day-to-day technology choices we make in a Scala team can lead to the make or break of a company; especially when resources are limited and speed to market is a competitive advantage.
7.40pm: Stefano Bonetti - Senior Software Developer at Sky
Title: Back-pressure explained with Akka-Streams and Akka-HTTP
Back-pressure is a key feature of reactive streams that can bestow great resilience to systems under load. We'll look at the benefits of back-pressure and how it affects both local and remote data streaming.
8pm: Socialise and Refreshments
We do have limited space, so please do RSVP early to avoid disappointment.
We look forward to seeing you there!
All the best,
Alice, Tony and the Scala Central team
