Scala Central #11
Details
Our next Scala Central event will be on the 13th September, where we are being hosted by BlackRock, at their offices in Moorgate.
We have a great lineup for you this month, with Dennis Hunziker taking us through BlackRock’s Scala journey. We also have an interesting talk from Joachim Hofer of Zalando, one of Europe’s largest e-commerce websites, who will be talking about the highs and lows of switching high-profile projects to Akka Streams. We will also be hearing from Anton Vanco of Marketing Technology company Magnetic about data processing framework Apache Flink.
If you’re interested in being involved with future Meetups, please do get in touch, we’re always keen to hear from you.
The agenda for the evening will be as follows.
6:30pm: Doors Open
7pm: Dennis Hunziker - Software Engineer @ BlackRock
Title: Our Scala Journey - From Spark Streaming to Akka
Abstract: We have chosen Spark Streaming for transforming and loading data into a new data platform. A decision that led to a lot of interesting experiences. In this talk, I will go through the good as well as the bad ones and how we eventually ended up replacing Spark Streaming with a new application based on a less complicated design using Akka with Scala.
7.20pm: Anton Vanco - Principal Engineer @ Magnetic
Title: Introduction to Apache Flink
Abstract: Apache Flink is a high-throughput data processing framework which enables building and executing complex dataflow graphs, either as a stream (DataStream API) or a batch (DataSet API) processor.
In this talk we'll be focusing on the streaming aspect, including the execution model and its integration with Apache Kafka, time-based operations, fault tolerance and custom data persistence. We'll also showcase some of the features on fully-working pipeline examples.
Outline:
- Basics of Flink
- Data sources and programming model
- Windowing and time-based operations
- Working with state
- Fault tolerance
- Customised output persistence
7.40pm: Joachim Hofer - Backend Engineer @ Zalando
Title: Risking Everything with Akka Streams
Abstract: Zalando is in the process of moving a massive project named "Jimmy", the calculation of product availability, to a new platform architecture. As this architecture is event-driven, back in June 2016, Joachim and his team decided to use Akka Streams for the task. But what has happened since then? This talk will explore the key lessons and best practices that Joachim and his team learned when switching high-profile projects to Akka Streams.
Speaker Bio: Joachim Hofer is a backend engineer at Zalando Tech. When he finished studying Computer Science, the abyss that is Enterprise Java swallowed him whole. Thanks to Scala, he has emerged again as an author of SBT Plugins, and now writes and blogs about Scala in addition to contributing to Open Source.
8pm: Socialise and Refreshments
We do have limited space (as you will have seen if you came along to the previous meetups!), so please do RSVP early to avoid disappointment.
We look forward to seeing you there!
