Scottsdale Desert Scribes
Please read membership requirements BELOW. The Scottsdale Desert Scribes Writers Group meets Tuesday evenings to improve the writing of: • experienced novelists, story writers, feature writers or essayists, working toward publication. • experienced or advanced script or screenplay writers working toward an option or preparing for performance. Group members will accomplish these goals by sharing written and verbal feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of each other’s work. This group is not designed for inexperienced writers developing their writing skills. As many area Meetups accept beginning writers at every level and genre of writing, we've narrowed our focus to the experienced or professional authors and script writers. A pool of seasoned writers increases the level of submissions to the group and brings a sharper perspective during critiques of other's works. This keeps participants closely matched and the group as a whole benefit from experienced peer-level assessments. MEMBERSHIP Please email a 4-8 page writing sample (Word, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, text, pdf) to [masked] All work stays confidential between the organizers and can be deleted once it's reviewed. Any notes you wish to include that offers perspective about either the work presented or your writing background is appreciated. Thanks for submitting! Can't say this enough: members are counted on to contribute insightful comments. Plenty of how-to guides can be found on offering critique, what to look for, etc. It’s interesting reading, too. We value membership interactions as much as quality of material. Attendees are urged to bring work (fresh or revised) as often as possible. * * * When you attend with material, you have three choices: 1) [limit ~ 2,800 words] You distribute copies for reading outside the group meeting and receive critique the following week. We urge anyone who accepts a "take home paper" to return the following week with their critique. 2) [limit ~ 2,800 words] Either you may read aloud, then receive verbal and written critique the night you attend, or 3) as above, but have participants silently read your material before receiving critique. Having said all this, we want to work hard and have fun doing this. If you think you'll fit in, submit samples and share your talents. We sincerely look forward to meeting area writers and reading your work at our next Meetup! * * * How the evening flows and general housekeeping: Please arrive by 6:00 if you plan to eat, to help minimize wait staff traffic and table noise past 6:30 pm, during readings. When you arrive, please check with a moderator to be logged into a break-out group. Readings and critiques begin at 6:30 PM sharp as Mimi's wants us out by 9:00. During the sign-in period, a Moderator will assign break-out groups. Writers should bring 6-8 printed copies of their work to share with their breakout group. Limit your copy to 2,800 max words (please know your word count). Twelve-point type is preferred for readability, double-spaced, so legible notes can be written for you to take home. If your printer duplexes, do print on both sides. We request reasonable quiet so the speaker can concentrate and members can focus on the materials presented. In all likelihood, that means no young children please, unless they are experienced writers or can meditate in a lotus position for three hours! Cell phones: aargh! Yes, we're all addicted, God save the Queen. Mute or leave in your car. If you must use your cell phone, i.e., PayPal your significant other bail money or play Candy Crush, please leave the room—it's very distracting. We target a break at 7:30 and ask that you wait until then. A tip of le béret to Mimi's Cafe for hosting us. Mimi's has many coupons on the web from http://mimiscafe.com/sharethejoy/, http://retailmenot.com, http://coupons.com, and from the many cornucopia of couponery sites out there. Who doesn't want free, day-old muffins?
