The mission of 500 Women Scientists is to promote a diverse and inclusive scientific community that brings progressive science-based solutions to local and global challenges. You can learn more about the national organization at https://500womenscientists.org/
In our local pod, we are focusing on 3 key areas: 1) Supporting scientific literacy 2) Promoting diversity and inclusivity in science 3) Stewarding the science policy interface
We meet periodically to organize actions in support of our mission. We invite Seattle-area women in the sciences (natural and social), technology, engineering, and/or math to join us. Allies of women in STEM are also welcome.
The long arc of history bends toward justice not by random chance, but because the people demand it with their souls, their voices and with their bodies.
Help us bring our banner through the 3rd Seattle Womxn's March. We'll be wearing purple, flower crowns, and lab coats or other lab gear (but feel free to wear whatever you like).
We'll have pre-march snacks, extra posters and are a dog/kid friendly group.
Meet us in the northwest corner of the ball field (Pine St side of the park). We'll be there by 9AM.
Scientists and activists need self-care! Jeanna Wheeler from our leadership team is co-presenting this healing movement session. No previous experience needed - bring your two left feet. Nia is a fusion of dance, martial arts, and healing techniques that is accessible to all levels of fitness and physical ability. We will hold the intention to sense greater strength, stability, and ease in the body while releasing mental and emotional tension.
The Seattle chapter of 500 Women Scientists presents a discussion and workshop focusing on organized labor in STEM fields and highlighting the impact of the #MeToo movement on STEM professionals. Speakers include leaders from local labor organizations that represent STEM workers, as well as people on the front lines of developing greater protections for women in STEM, who experience rates of workplace sexual harassment second only to those in the military. The session provides guidance on how to navigate workplace conflicts, and attendees will leave with a toolkit of strategies for dealing with gendered harassment in the workplace.
