DESCRIPTION:
This is a seminar unfolding from our curiosity about the deep philosophical history of Iran, and our desire to become acquainted with contemporary thinkers who find their lineage and influences rooted in this region of the world.
We will begin by reading Alireza Doostdar’s "The Iranian Metaphysicals", a text that follows the country’s thinkers and practitioners of the weird as they come into conflict with powerful political, philosophical and religious forces in modern Iran. Doostdar argues that these collisions, rather than stifling esotericism, have allowed for the emergence of strange, imaginative, and surprisingly rationalistic new metaphysics, whose evolution he charts across the 20th century. We hope that the historical context for weird Iranian thought this text provides will allow us engage more thoughtfully with idiosyncratic Iranian thinkers like Mohaghegh, Negarestani and Massumi in the months to come.
