What we're about

A group for people interested in talking about and hacking on Kubernetes, Google’s solution for scheduling and orchestrating containers at scale. We’re excited about microservices, containers, the distributions that run them and the solutions that deploy, manage, and extend them. Any skill level is welcome; we’re all new to Kubernetes and we want to create an open, welcoming environment for other Kubernauts. Contact us if you are interested in speaking at or sponsoring the meet-up. We welcome content and demos.

Cluster-API SIG & In-Place Pod Vertical Scaling

SURF Incubator

Hello Seattle Kubernauts! Please join us for the March Seattle K8s meetup. Ashish will present recent activity in the cluster-api SIG related to the AWS provider. Vinay and Peng will team up and present: "In-place Vertical Scaling for Kubernetes Pods." Currently, vertical scaling of Kubernetes pod CPU or memory resource allocations requires pod restarts. This is disruptive to services, and expensive for long-running applications/jobs. It is very important to have the ability to scale resources without pod restart. In this talk, Vinay and Peng will present a design for restart-free scaling of pod resources, with pod restart as a policy-controlled choice rather than a necessity. They will illustrate a customer use case, a gene-sequencing application where pod restart is expensive. They will provide an overview of their implementation of vertical scaling of pod CPU/memory resources. They will discuss how they addressed some unique challenges such as multiple scheduler race conditions, talk about how failures are handled via retries, and conclude with a demo. SPONSORED: Big thanks to NetApp, Sysdig and Tigera for their support! Are you a local group member interested in presenting to the group?
