Kubernetes Seattle: K8s at Salesforce, a Deep Dive

Hello Seattle Kubernauts!

December is extra busy this year with KubeCon being right here in Seattle. If you still have a hankering for some extra networking and learning about K8s, we invite you to join us as we wrap up 2018.

For December we are going to hop, skip, and jump over to the Eastside and find out how Salesforce is utilizing Kubernetes. There are multiple teams using K8s at Salesforce. Three of those teams are going to share their experiences with us.

The meetup will be on Wednesday, Dec 19, 2018 and starts at 6:00 with food and beverages. The presentations will start at 6:30.

How we managed and monitored multiple, network isolated Kubernetes clusters without tearing all our hair out.

6:50 - 7:10 Vyjayanthi Raja - Why Kubernetes didn't schedule our pod and other adventures.

We use Kubernetes to build a horizontally scalable software load balancer for all workloads within Salesforce. Most days, we love k8s and marvel at how easy it makes for us to operate a multi-region, distributed system. However, every once in a while we uncover a strange behavior, idiosyncrasy or edge case in k8s, totally unexpected, leading to head scratching investigation! We'd love to talk about some such incidents, impact, fixes and/or work-arounds.

7:10 - 7:30 Matthew Gilham - Kubernetes, meet Spark!

We use Kubernetes to provide distributed stream processing clusters on-demand in Salesforce data-centers. We want to talk about our learnings from the past and also current efforts to leverage Apache Spark's experimental direct support for the Kubernetes scheduler to power our analytics workloads.

Duncan Smith is a Senior Engineer on the Salesforce Application Model team - the team that enables deployment of micro-services atop Kubernetes in Salesforce private cloud infrastructure. As a native Washingtonian - he is obligated to wear Flannel, drink aggressively bitter IPAs, and take Vitamin D Supplements to compensate for the total lack of sunlight.

Vyjayanthi Raja is a software engineer who's had her “head in the cloud” for nearly six years. She started her career at Microsoft, working on the core compute infrastructure systems that power Microsoft Azure. She is currently a Lead Member of Technical Staff at Salesforce, where she builds cloud networking infrastructure, deployed via her new favorite orchestration tool - Kubernetes.

Matt Gilham has been leading development of big data and analytics platforms and solutions for 10 years. He currently co-leads the team that provides Salesforce's internal Spark service.

Parking is available in the building for a fee. There is also parking at Bellevue Square (3 blocks away). There is street parking and other garages available nearby. The Bellevue transit center is just one block from the building if you are able to take public transit.
