I found the name for it recently, but I have always knows I was different from the people around me and it always confused me.
Yes, The Highly Sensitive Person
Easily overwhelmed by activity, lots going on, change Sound grates on me and exhausts me Overly conscientious about the feelings of others, twisting myself in knots to avoid confrontation Crippling childhood shyness leading to lifelong feelings of alienation Able to listen and support others via keen intuition and perception I could go on a long time ... :)
I would like to think about this more, but I do like the daytrip idea and book club thing. I think potlucks are nice. Also I go to a lot of independent film and various cultural performances and those are always more fun when there are people to discuss with afterwards.
Primarily friendship and perhaps some advice from people who have been through similar experiences. I specifically came looking today for advice on how people deal with the over-stimulation that can't be avoided (noisy ventilation system at work, people sitting next to me and tapping their feet vibrating the floor, etc). However I am always on the lookout for company that understands the way I see the world and that's so hard to find!
I grew up in Seattle and live in lower Queen Anne with two chihuahuas. It has been a huge relief to discover a name for this characteristic and finally acknowledge it as something other than a crippling defect and moreover a gift to help others.
