We are going to paddle across Gig Harbor, out across the north end of the Tacoma Narrows, then along the Pt. Defiance north shore to Owen Beach, and then back. Our crossings of the Narrows will be close to slack-tide at 1:02 p.m.
This is a 10 nautical-mile winter paddle that may be subject to wind waves and tide rips.
To sign up for this paddle, you need to be an intermediate or beyond paddler, with re-entry, and rescue training, skills and practice, and you must be able to paddle at a 2.5 knots pace. The required kayaking experience and skills need to be documented in your meetup-profile information and your answers to the sign-up questions.
Schedule and Itinerary:
9:15 a.m. - meet at the Gig Harbor Rent-a-Boat dock.
10:00 a.m. - launch and paddle around Gig Harbor and across to Owen beach, total 5 n.m.
~ 12:30 pm. - arrive at Owen Beach and have a picnic lunch.
~ 1:30 p.m. launch for the return paddle, and paddle back to Gig Harbor, total 3.8 n.m.
~ 2:15 p.m. shore-break at Skansie Brothers Park, and paddle back to the Gig Harbor Rent-a-Boat dock, total 1.2 n.m.
~ 3:30 p.m. arrive back at the Gig Harbor Rent-a-Boat dock.
Conditions and Contingency:
This paddle is contingent upon reasonably safe wind and weather conditions.
Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks, picnic lunch, waterproof paddle jacket and hat, VHF radio if you have one, immersion gear. Layered warm clothes, waterproof insulated paddle gloves and/or pogies, warm head and ears protection. Extra change of warm clothes in a dry-bag. Boat light.
Wearing immersion gear (drysuit or wetsuit, with drysuit preferable) is mandatory for this paddle.
