Rough-Water Skills Practice and Play Session (with Covid Dist.)
Hosted by Seattle Kayaking Meetup
Details
The forecast for Sunday afternoon on Lake WA is SW 12 knots with gusts to 30 knots ... another great opportunity for rough-water skills practice and play ... with not real extreme winds, for anyone unsure who wants to check this out ... : ) ... ... at sandy, south-facing Enatai Beach. With five miles fetch, 2-foot waves are likely, but will we get lucky and get the elusive 3-foot-high waves??? ... and if you stay in the vicinity of the beach, for starters, anything that happens will wind-drift right back to the sandy shallows and beach.
Activity Mode and RSVP: This is an opportunity for individuals to practice and play in rough-water conditions. This will not be a hosted, led, nor guided meetup event. Participants will be on their own regarding what they do and regarding their own risk and safety.
Arrivals earlier or later than the posted time are fine; just post your ETA in the comments when you know it.
RSVP's without answers to the sign-up questions will not be moved from wait-list to going. If you do not get the sign-up questions from the meetup app, send a meetup message with responses: (1) Are you an intermediate or beyond paddler with wet exit/rescues training and prior rough-water paddling experience? (2) Will you bring and wear a helmet? (3) Did you read the entire posting write-up? (4) Describe your immersion gear. (5) Describe your kayak.
Participation Requirements: Intermediate or beyond paddler. Swimming capability. Prior wet exit and rescues training and practice. Prior experience paddling in wind and waves. Equipment Requirements: Sea-kayak, paddle, pfd, sprayskirt, paddle float, pump. A helmet (... sandy beach, but there are a bulkhead and dock nearby, there are rocks along shore under the bridge, and you could get hit by yours or someone else's kayak), with preference, in most to least protective order: whitewater helmet, climbing helmet, bicycle helmet, etc.
Immersion gear (dry-suit over insulating clothing or 3 mm wetsuit with paddle jacket). Kayak wheels are recommended for getting to and from the beach. A not-obvious path down through the landscape west of the park building wheels well.
Parking and Covid-19 Considerations: No parking pass is required at this location. Out of the water, social distance at least 6 feet and/or wear a mask. On the water, to the greatest extent possible, social distance and minimize contact.
Helpful tip: while unloading or loading in wind, park your car with the car and kayak long axis parallel to the wind direction.
Waiver and Indemnification: This is not a hosted, guided, nor led meetup event, nor a kayaking-skills lesson. In RSVPing for this practice and play opportunity, each sign-up-ee certifies that he/she has the required kayaking and rough-water skills and experience described in the posting and will bring and use the listed required equipment. Each participant will assess the conditions encountered at the site and make his/her own decision regarding the what and where he/she wants to do. Kayaking activities and rough-water kayaking have inherent risk and each sign-up-ee acknowledges that kayaking activities and rough-water kayaking have risk of injury or even death, and signs up and participates entirely and exclusively at his/her own risk.
