False!

“Just a Hairball” is perhaps the most prevalent and harmful myth out there about cat health. Hairballs are in fact the most common first symptom of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a serious pre-cancerous illness epidemic in domestic cats. Ignoring hairballs blows our chance to stop GI cancer before it starts.

When cats groom, a healthy gut passes ingested fur all the way through. Diseased intestine has impaired motility, causing hair to accumulate in the stomach. Hairballs are often seen years before any other symptoms, and are your best chance for early intervention.

Find out more at the next gathering of Secrets to Cat Health and Happiness. Let's get together and debunk some of the most prevalent myths about cats and their health. This Meetup will be held at The Happy Beast (http://www.thehappybeast.com) in Lafayette.

Meetup myth busting will be led by feline exclusive veterinarian, Fern Slack, DVM from Uniquely Cats Veterinary Center (https://www.uniquelycats.com) in Boulder. Dr. Slack has been practicing feline exclusive medicine for over 23 years. She has served two terms on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), and one term as the Chairman of the Practice Guidelines Committee of the AAFP, overseeing the creation and publication of several current standard-of-care feline medicine documents.
