What we're about

The See Spot Read (SSR) Calendar is exactly that---a Calendar of read events. In these events, children---generally first or second graders---read with delight to our canine companions. Our volunteer teams come from various nationally recognized therapy dog organizations. The Calendar offers numerous opportunities in Wake County for volunteers to help children advance in their skills by reading to our canine companions. We present a coordinated and consistent program that promotes the benefits of children reading to dogs to enhance literacy skills. We motivate and encourage reading as well as help build self-esteem and self-confidence in reading aloud. Another important benefit is that children learn how to interact with our canine companions.

We provide a service for orienting our volunteers who have earned therapy dog certification before they may participate in any event on the SSR Calendar. All volunteers must use this service and complete the Volunteer Profile fully before volunteering at any site on our calendar. Therapy Dog/Team Certification with a nationally recognized therapy organization is also required. Proof of current therapy dog certification is to be carried, or worn, at all times. Officials at schools, libraries and other sites have the right to ask volunteers to show proof of their certification at any time. Volunteers may be interested in shadowing a read event without their dog. (Most Therapy Certification Organizations require a shadow event.)

We are growing and looking forward to adding new volunteer teams. This calendar can only thrive through the efforts of dedicated volunteer teams who are willing to make a difference in their community! Make a difference and help children learn to love to read and to read with confidence! We look forward to working with you and your canine companion.
