As we get older, we hope that our lives will become easier. We anticipate retirement as the time in our lives when we can finally relax. I did. I retired from Virginia to return to Dallas to care for an elderly brother and mother. I had been gone for over thirty years from the Dallas area. Except for one very good friend, I no longer had connections in Dallas. I learned what a friend I had in some of the community resources. Although my brother and mother are no longer here, I have discovered I still call upon some of the services available through various agencies. I also learned at some of the meetup brunches I’ve attended that most folks really don’t know about the services they provide and how they just might be able to help THEM.
Little by little, I will be offering opportunities to visit the various agencies or bring in speakers for a “lunch and learn.” The first two events will be visiting the Senior Source and a field trip on Dart with our very own Travel Ambassador.
When I used to go the Fair, I traveled by Dart and you might want to as well. It’s not only an easier and less expensive way to travel, it’s fun traveling with all the other fair goers.
The Senior Source offers a variety of assistance with its mission being: "To enhance the overall quality of life and empower all older adults in greater Dallas to THRIVE."
Other meetups under consideration will include but not limited to the VNA, Area on Aging, representatives of the real estate industry, estate sales, AARP (I’ve taken their classes on my first cell phone, ready to go back to another class on my newest one), financial planners, just to name a few – if I live that long – my mother lived to 99 years old.
After each event, I will pick out a place to go eat for those who would like to do so. Most of the time, it won’t be posted as a separate event because I won’t be able to nail down the time. We will either visit the facilities or have a speaker in for a "lunch and learn" session.
In order for me to hold the event, I require at least 5 people to sign up at least one week or more BEFORE THE EVENT. If 5 people have not signed up by then, I will cancel the event. Most events will be limited to 15 participants.
If you have suggestions or would like to host/hostess an event relevant to “finding help,” just let Gayle or me know.
In the meantime, if you haven't already joined our sister meetup group, I invite you to look them over. Gayle, the CEO ("Chief Executive ORGANIZER"), always has fun things going on.
