What causes or nonprofits do you feel strongly about or want to volunteer with? (ex: hunger, the environment or Habitat) Do you currently volunteer with any nonprofits?

Currently, I do the vast majority of my volunteer work for 7 fun non-profits. 1. KC Track Club, largest track club in greater KCMO. 2. KC BBQ Society, largest BBQ sanctioning organization in the world. I am a KCBS Certified BBQ Judge. Being a BBQ Judge is a tough job. However, someone has to do it! :) 3. The American Royal. Their major event is the World Series of Barbecue®, the absolute largest BBQ competition in the entire world. 4. KC FilmFest, held every April, is the largest Film Festival in greater KCMO. 5. Fringe Festival, held every July, now spans 11 days and hosts over 400 events at 20 venues. It is jam-packed with live theater, dance, performance art, visual art, spoken word, puppetry, storytelling, film, & fashion. 6. Serve KC, the largest independent volunteer service organization in greater KCMO. 7. Singles Available for Community Service. In 2014, I volunteered for 73 different events & donated over 410 hours. I was very blessed, very fulfilled, and never met 1 turkey!

What type of volunteer work are you interested in doing? (ex. sorting or organizing, cooking/serving food, building or physical work, ect.) Do you have any special skills?

Over the years, I have served with several non-profits as either a Co-Organizer, Event Organizer, Event Host, Volunteer Organizer, Volunteer Recruiter. I am fairly good with data processing, & communications. In 2013, the Kansas Speedway added a sanctioned BBQ event, & a 5K race to the Annual Balloon Fest. That enabled me to volunteer for 3 different events in one day. My record is volunteering for 4 different events in 1 day, for a total of 8 different events in a 2-day weekend. I challenge anyone to meet or beat that record. That would definitely be an interesting contest. I was so worn out after just two days.

The Serve KC Leadership Team is made up of volunteer Organizers and Event Hosts. Would you be interested in hosting an occasional event or organizing with a new nonprofit?

I am an Event Organizer or an Event Host for several groups, & a former Event Organizer for Serve KC. I have organized or hosted several Serve KC & other MeetUp events in 2012, 2013 & 2014. I have several more unusual & eclectic events planned for 2015 for different MeetUp groups. I really like to organize, plan a wide variety of unique events, & participate in interesting and unusual events that help others. I am the Event Organizer for the 2017 Kansas Ghost Town Tour. I am thinking about co-sponsoring a KCBS sanctioned BBQ competition in Parkville, Missouri in 2018. Planning for a BBQ competition takes a lot of dedicated volunteers and a lot of advance planning. It is usually best to start planning at least 1 year in advance.

What do you hope to get from volunteering with Serve KC?

Platte County. Kansas City is nationally recognized as one of the most generous and philanthropic communities in the USA. Kansas City ranks 5th among large U.S. population centers for its percentage of volunteers at 33.4% (The Corporation for National and Community Service, 2009).

How did you find out about Serve KC?

It used to be that if one did a Google search for: "Kansas City" largest independent volunteer organization, ServeKC would show up in the top 3 hits. Unfortunately, Google constantly revises their top hits. As of the date that I am writing this, ServeKC is no longer on the first page of hits. Hopefully, ServeKC will soon return to the first page of hits.

I definitely enjoy giving back to the community, & helping others. The world can certainly use more dedicated & conscientious volunteers! I live in the Northland area. I have enjoyed volunteering with different organizations, since I was a teenager.

What Ken, "Parkville's # 2 F. is saying about this Meetup Group

Serve KC is absolutely the greatest of all of the meetup groups in the greater Kansas City area! Serve KC is dedicated to helping others -- not helping ourselves. However, by helping others, we do help ourselves! That warm inner glow is priceless!
