7:00pm-8:00pm - A New Way to Build Cloud Native, Serverless Applications on Apache OpenWhisk

FaaS computing platforms assume that functions are stateless and execute quickly. However, most real applications require the management of some state, and more complex applications may need to orchestrate a set of stateful functions. The orchestration may be long lived and exceed time limits set for individual functions. In this talk, we present some of our research into an orchestration framework we call Composer. Composer lets developers specify rich control and data flows using Javascript functions. Developers can visualize their compositions using a re-imagined cloud development environment we call the Functions Shell, which has streamlined commands and integrates interactive visual elements so developers can more easily debug and analyze their cloud native applications. We present a reference implementation of Composer for Apache OpenWhisk, the open source FaaS core that powers IBM Functions. Composer and Functions Shell is available at our Github page: https://github.com/ibm-functions/composer
