In recent years, AWS Lambda has been the serverless hammer of choice for more and more computational nails. Lambda is marketed for ease of development and scale but realizing this requires fully understanding the trade-offs and limitations of the Lambda platform. This talk goes into the details of Lambda, specific platform and application optimizations to Lambda, and best practices when managing Lambda micro services at scale.

About Kevin

Kevin S Lin is the founder of Cloud.Thence, a consulting firm focused on helping companies scale and prevail on AWS. Prior to Cloud.Thence, Kevin has spent 5 years at AWS, working primarily in scaling and monitoring large scale distributed systems. In that time, Kevin has worked with customers of all sizes, from startups to major enterprises like Netflix, find solutions to their major scaling challenges.

With Serverless adoption on the rise, an obvious initial question is "what can I do with it?". Web and mobile backend implementation, real-time file and stream processing and other use cases are an excellent fit for Serverless. But, there are many more. In this talk, we'll run through a quick top-down of just what Serverless is (and isn’t), then compare some design patterns and what sorts of workflows we can leverage. We’ll also review some design considerations and best practices.

About Jesse
Jesse is a cloud native advocate with Oracle Cloud Native Labs. He started his career in software nearly 20 years ago, working up the stack from driver development into userspace and container development. He's been working with containers for several years, first in Solaris and later in Linux. Most recently, he's taken a role with OCI as a Cloud Native Advocate focused on Kubernetes, containers, serverless and other cloud native technologies.
