What are dreams, and why do we have them? When did human consciousness first emerge? And how has it evolved since? Do early Buddhist descriptions of the mind, and of the human condition, make sense in light of modern science? These are just some of the questions we’ll explore at this coming day on ‘Ancient Wisdom & Modern Psychology’ at The Weekend University. In this series of talks, we’ll put ancient ideas to the test of modern science. Drawing on perspectives from neuroscience, philosophy and cognitive psychology, we’ll discuss dreams, consciousness, and mindfulness, and examine them in light of modern psychological research. BOOK HERE Attendees will learn: How to understand your dreams; modern psychological theories of dreaming, from classical psychoanalysis (was Freud right after all?) to 21st Century Cognitive Neuroscience The psychological effects of ancient buddhist practices; what the latest research reveals about the link between mindfulness and wellbeing The evolution of consciousness; how the human experience has changed from the time of Socrates to Freud, the birth of philosophy, and the emergence of psychotherapy in the 20th Century. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how these ancient ideas, when paired with the latest psychological research, can benefit your own life, and your ability to help others. BOOK HERE Lectures & Speakers The Psychology of Dreams - Dr Josie Malinowski, PhD Dr Josie Malinowski is an oneirologist (dream-researcher), oneironaut (dream-explorer), and lecturer in psychology at the University of East London. Her academic research interests are primarily within the fields of sleep and dreaming, altered states, and consciousness. Mindfulness, Buddhism & Modern Psychology - Dr Steven Stanley, PhD Steven Stanley is a critical psychologist and Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, Wales. His academic background is in Psychology, and his research focuses on the therapeutic cultures of late modernity, with a particular focus on social studies of mindfulness. The Evolution of Consciousness - Dr Mark Vernon, PhD Dr Mark Vernon is a writer, broadcaster, psychotherapist and former Anglican priest, with an interest in Ancient Philosophy. His work focuses on the skills and insights that illuminate our inner lives. He contributes regularly to programmes on the BBC, comments and reviews for the national press, as well as giving talks and leading workshops. Dr Vernon has degrees in physics and theology, and a PhD in Ancient Greek philosophy. He is a member of the teaching faculty at the School of Life, and works as a psychotherapist in private practice and at the Maudsley hospital. What we're about

Hello, the aim of this group is to present talks and discussions by some of the top experts in the fields of Sex, Love and Relationships. The group is OPEN TO ALL (all genders and sexualities) whether you are interested in the topics discussed or you are working in psychotherapy, counselling, relationships and sexual health etc. As I'm sure you agree, there is much to be debated, discovered and explored within these subjects therefore we will present talks on a wide variety of topics. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificates will be available to attendees awarded by our sponsor City CBT Coaching College.

Our Speakers include

Dr. Meg John Barker is a writer, academic, counsellor and activist specialising in sex and relationships. Meg John is a senior lecturer in psychology at the Open University and has published many academic books and papers on topics including non-monogamous relationships, sadomasochism, counselling, and mindfulness, as well as co-editing the journal Psychology & Sexuality. They were the lead author of The Bisexuality Report – which has informed UK policy and practice around bisexuality. They are involved in running many public events on sexuality and relationships, including Sense about Sex, Critical Sexology, and Gender & Sexuality Talks. Meg John is also a UKCP accredited therapist working with gender and sexually diverse clients. Their 2013 book Rewriting the Rules is a friendly guide love, sex and relationships, and they blog about these matters on Twitter: megbarkerpsych.

Windy Dryden is one of the leading practitioners and trainers in the UK in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tradition of psychotherapy. He is best known for his work in Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RECBT), a leading CBT approach. He has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy since 1975 and was one of the first people in Britain to be trained in CBT.
He has published over 200 books and has trained therapists all over the world, in as diverse places as the UK, the USA, South Africa, Turkey and Israel. He has just been awarded Emeritus Professorship from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Dr Raj Persaud could be described as a modern “Renaissance Man”. He is a Consultant Psychiatrist who unusually for a psychiatrist holds a first class degree in psychology and in addition has been awarded over 8 degrees and diplomas including a Masters in Statistics. These are just some of his numerous accomplishments. Dr Persaud is a distinguished lecturer with an innovative approach to psychological issues.

Dominic Davies has over 30 years working as a psychotherapist and clinical sexologist with a wide range of gender and sexual diversities. He is a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and a senior accredited counsellor/psychotherapist with them.

Accredited by the National Council for Psychotherapy, and holds membership of the World Association for Sexology and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and CARAS Community Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities.
