What we're about

This group is for adults who like to hike, snowshoe, x-country ski, kayak, canoe, bicycle and pursue other outdoor activities. We will focus these activities in the Shawangunk Mountains and in other Hudson Valley locations like the Catskills, Taconics, Hudson Highlands on both sides of the river, and other areas we find interesting. Hikes and other activities will range from easy to difficult. The pace may be slow, moderate or even somewhat brisk (depending on your fitness level and experience), but our coordinators will attempt to make certain that everyone finishes as part of the group.

Sam’s Point, Verkeerder Kill Falls & High Point - Minnewaska State Park

Sam's Point Preserve Conservation Center (use 41.670572, -74.360833)

The park gate does not open until 9:00, but if it is a beautiful day, I suggest you arrive around 8:45 to get in line to get in. At times the lot fills up quickly. This hike is about 10 miles. There is around 1000’ of elevation gain over the course of the hike. Although we will not be flying along the trail, this is a difficult hike. We will meet at the Sam’s Point Visitor Center and take a carriage road up fairly steeply to Sam’s Point - a terrific viewpoint. From there we will proceed to Verkeerder Kill Falls - the highest waterfall in the Gunks. Next, after climbing another fairly steep but relatively short hill, we will travel along the High Point Trail - one of my favorite trail sections in the park. There is some minor rock scrambling along the way, but the views along the way and in all directions from High Point are well worth it. We will take a short detour to a former tower site with more great views before taking the High Point Carriage Road back along Lake Maratanza and down to the Visitor Center. The park fee is $10/vehicle and Empire Passes are accepted. For those interested in carpooling from Ellenville, post a comment below and we can work out arrangements closer to the hike. I will post a comment and message all the attendees shortly before the hike as to what special gear will be required. I’m thinking neither snowshoes nor Microspikes will be required, but who knows. This hike will often be traversing exposed ridge, so it will be colder and windier than you expect. Check the weather for Cragsmoor, NY to get an idea of what clothing you will need. Initially everyone will be placed on the waitlist and moved to the “Going” list only after I have satisfied myself that they are prepared for this hike and have appropriate gear. A number of people have asked me about this hike, so most of the spaces have already been reserved, but if there is excess demand, I will repeat the hike later in the spring. After the hike we will retire to a local restaurant for food & drinks.
