  • It's been a while - but I love these kinds of topic :) Code of ethics for the meet-up everyone! 1) Share your relevant point in 2-3 minutes or less each time.

    2) We are proud that we are respectful and open-minded to the ideas of others. (I.E waiting for your turn, mindful comments) please help us keep it that way.

    3) Comment on the point and naturally refrain from commenting on the person or saying "you" - it can easily become an ad hominem.... :( Learn more at: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ad+hominem

    4) Please bring 50 cents to help keep Shy Philosophers alive.

Thanks everyone! Please bring your genuine thoughts and ideas - we all look forward hearing them :)

There appears to be two approaches to this question. Either consciousness can be explained scientifically by material or quantum processes, or it cannot be explained by material or quantum processes. The scientific approach tends to get very complex and theoretical. The later approach bears resemblances to Eastern spiritualism like some explanations in Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern philosophies.

I think of consciousness as being the background of all reality. That is, the universe (with all its materials, energies, concepts, etc.) exist in consciousness! Human consciousness (or awareness) is a narrow projection and focussing of this impersonal infinitely larger consciousness. The universe, as understood from a human perspective, is a human universe that exist only in human consciousness.
