This event, held annually since 2000 with a break last year, is to celebrate 20 years of work to restore the ecology of the Hillsborough River as it flows through Tampa's urban neighborhoods, an ongoing effort of the Tampa Bay Sierra Club and its ally Friends of the River.
The Hillsborough River connects the opposite shores of the diverse neighborhoods of Seminole Heights and Sulphur Springs, the former largely white middle class, the latter one of Tampa's lower income neighborhoods with a high minority population. Unlike the dozens of other holiday boat parades held annually in the Tampa Bay region, this event is free and open to anyone who has access to any type of watercraft who pledges to abide by the event's safety rules and has long been known as "The Boat Parade for Everyone". As the River connects these diverse communities, the event reminds us that we are all part of this city with a river running through it, Tampa's primary natural resource that we may all access and enjoy either from the shore or on the water.
