Exercise Guide: UM's Saginaw Forest

Details

This is NOT an in-person event.

These Exercise Guides are intended to assist and encourage exploration of parks and natural areas in the Huron Valley Group region. Please enjoy them on your own or with others.

Come out to UM's Saginaw Forest on the west side of Ann Arbor. You can hike about 2 miles or so, around 3rd Sister Lake and in the woods. Trails are mostly flat or with fairly gentle rises.

In addition to the red-bellied and downy woodpeckers pictured below, I saw, but could not photograph, a pair of pileated woodpeckers on the west side of Third Sister Lake.

Your exercise might be more enjoyable if you read a bit about the Saginaw Forest before you go. https://seas.umich.edu/research/field_research_sites/saginaw_forest has some excellent links. In particular, I highly recommend the first (chronologically last) entry in http://saginawforest.blogspot.com/ - it is a beautiful goodbye letter from the last caretaker to live at Saginaw Forest.
