"This group is for anyone interested in outdoor activities, and getting involved in protecting the environment and wildlife. We all have our own special places outdoors, where we go to relax, exercise, decompress, unplug, and be awed and inspired by nature. Whether you're a hiker, a photographer, a mountain-biker or cross-country skier, a bird-watcher, a hunter/angler, or if you just like to drive to our public lands and be inspired by the magnificence of the scenery, America's public lands offer every outdoor experience under the sun (or the moon)."
Join us for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Day of Service. This is an annual event, started by Alicia Hamilton, who has taken a new position with Sierra Club, helping to ensure better training for our outdoor programs.
In 2019, we will again be partnering with community groups to help the City of Phoenix with a service project along the Rio Salado Restoration Area to celebrate service, a key aspect of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We’ll be meeting at the Rio Salado Restoration parking area at the Central Avenue Northeast Gateway of the Rio Salado, on the north side of the river at 2439 S. Central Avenue. Please consider bringing a non-perishable food item to donate to St. Mary's food bank. Please remember to bring a reusable water bottle with you and remember to drink plenty of water before and while you are working (Sierra Club will provide drinking water to refill your water bottle). You should wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals), long pants, and a hat. If you have a good pair of work gloves please bring them along.
We will be doing some trail work, picking up trash, planting plants, and removing invasive species among other things. Thank you!
