What we're about

Welcome to the official Ventura Sierra Club meetup group! We are everyone in Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Ojai, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Somis, El Rio, Port Hueneme, and all the little places inbetween. Want to hike locally? This is the place to be! Ease into fitness at beginner walks, get going on intermediate half or whole day hikes, or make new friendships on overnight backpacks. Want to volunteer for the environment? Check out our service activities! We do beach/river clean ups, trail repair, native plant restorations and more. Your personal fulfillment awaits! "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life." ~John Muir 1901

Oak Tree Planting

Telephone Road & South Kimball Road

Volunteers are invited to help plant oak trees at Community Park (Kimball & Telephone Rds., Ventura). Sierra Club agrees trees are a climate change solution and valuable asset to our region.

We will be installing 10 trees along the benches at the west bike path side of the park (2 trees per bench location). Meet at the west side of the park.

Wear long pants, long sleeves, bring a shovel, bring a filled reusable water bottle. Kids ok with supervising adult at all times. No dogs please.

When attending a Sierra Club outing, the participant may be around both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Therefore it is the participant’s choice to attend. If you are ill, don't come. If you become ill and test positive for Covid, you are required to notify the leader. Leaders will then submit an incident report.

This event is a collaboration of: East Ventura Community Council, Ventura Tree Alliance, Ventura Sierra Club. Special Thank you to: City of Ventura

Santa Clara River Nature Clean Up Day

Windrow Park

Come take care of the Santa Clara River and lessen the human caused impacts before rains arrive and (a LOT of) trash washes into the ocean. We remove paper, plastic and all manner of junk along the top of the south bank levee and a bit into the river setting where it is normally closed to the public. When you participate, you will be amazed how quiet and really natural the river environment can be, and how close and valuable that nature is to our homes.

A biologist is invited to set up a wildlife observation station full of binoculars for you to borrow and see species in the riparian corridor. A river exhibit booth will also be there to learn about the environmental science issues at the Santa Clara RIver.

Wear long pants and closed shoes. Bring gloves, filled reusable water bottle, and sun protection. This Clean Up Nature volunteer work day is a partnership of Ventura Sierra Club and Friends of the Santa Clara River. Kids 14 and under must be with an adult. No dogs please.

Note that going on this Sierra Club outing you are potentially around both individuals vaccinated and unvaccinated. It is your choice to attend the outing knowing this information. The leader can not and should not reveal the status of participants vaccination or reject a participant based on their vaccination status. DO NOT attend if you are experiencing any possible COVID symptoms or are sick.

Street parking near Windrow Park, walk up through the gate onto the levee to sign in.
