Also known as Happy Hour for introverts, the Silent Book Club started in 2012 with a couple of friends reading in companionable silence at a neighborhood bar.
The concept is simple yet revolutionary: we meet up at a bar or cafe to read in communal silence. Once the bell rings, silent reading time commences. After an hour, the bell rings again.
Other than that, there are no rules.
Liberated from the orthodoxy of traditional book clubs, you can bring whatever you'd like to read. Before and after the designated reading time, you're welcome to chat about anything and everything (including your favorite books).
A typical Silent Book Club Meeting goes like this:
3:00-3:30pm - People arrive, order drinks/food, share what they're reading
3:30-4:30pm - Quiet reading hour
4:30-5:00pm - Optional socializing, or just keep reading

Silent Book Club is a group of book lovers who enjoy reading together in public. All books and all readers are welcome. (But please RSVP 'yes' only if you can make it, out of respect for those on the waitlist!)
This event will take place in the Café (1st floor) at the Bode Museum. There is no entrance fee at the café.
Bring whatever you're reading, pick up a beverage and/or a snack, and read with us. No required reading, no assigned books. Just read together quietly and enjoy. It's as simple as that.
Our meetup will go something like this:
- 10:30am-11:00am - People arrive, order drinks/food
- 11:00am-12:00pm - Quiet reading hour
- 12:00pm-12:30pm - Optional socializing, share what you read in the last hour, or just keep reading
- Join us for lunch. We may need to split up in smaller groups if the group size becomes too large. 😊
