  • Ethereum Development Workshop w/ Niklas Kunkel

    Tech Labs Innovation Center

This workshop will walk through through some of the basics of Ethereum development to let anyone start making their own dapps. I'll be showing off the workflow used at Maker using some in-house tools we created under our DappHub pseudonym. I'll go through each item step by step and have a Q&A session afterwards. Things I will cover: • Setting up dev environment • Starting a new project • Importing libraries • Compiling a contract • Testing a contract • Deploying a contract to the Ethereum public chain and Kovan test network • Querying a deployed contract via CLI This should be everything you need to start making your own Dapps. Even if you're already a Dapp developer, I think you'll find this tooling much more simple and flexible to use than your existing setup. Tools I'll be Using: Parity An ethereum client which allows us to interact with the blockchain. It gives us access to the Kovan testnet. This is not reqired if you already have Geth, however you won't be able to deploy to the Kovan testnet. Dapp-cli This is a successor to popular dapp dev framework Dapple. This tool is a great framework for dapp projects. It lets us install and upgrade package libraries as well as build, test, and deploy our dapps to the blockchain. Seth (JSON-RPC wrapper) The JSON-RPC interface can be pretty confusing. Seth is a bash tool which wraps JSON-RPC calls into a much more elegant and simple to use interface. It lets us easily interact with our deployed contracts and parses return information. Installation Instructions: If you want to follow along on your computer during the presentation, I suggest you download these beforehand. Parity will need to sync with the entire ethereum blockchain history so it may take a few hours. Download and Install Parity: https://github.com/paritytech/parity/releases (https://github.com/paritytech/parity/releases) Install NixOS (a package manager): curl https://nixos.org/nix/install (https://nixos.org/nix/install) | sh Install ethabi and jshon (dependencies for seth): nix-env -i ethabi jshon download seth: git clone https://github.com/dapphub/seth (https://github.com/dapphub/seth) download dapp-cli: git clone https://github.com/dapphub/dapp (https://github.com/dapphub/dapp) Install seth: make link -C seth Install dapp-cli: make link -C dapp Looking forward to seeing all of you there.
