Peru 2009 in Spanish with English subtitles
This film won awards at world-class film festivals like Sundance and Montreal as well as major gay festivals in Miami, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, Seattle and Philadelphia. It was also Peru's entry as Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Until some Silver Screenings members brought it to my attention, I'd never heard of it. And the online trailer did not make me eager to see it. But then (new member) Jonathan F. loaned me his Blue-ray copy. When I watched it, I knew immediately I wanted our group to see it. It's every bit the awesome gay experience he (and others) told me it was.
Some quotes: (IMDb) 'Russell' of San Francisco: "One of the best new films exploring gay male identity, love and relationships. The writer, director, cinematographer and cast do a great job of exploring small-town life in Peru -in this case a rustic seaside village- with its traditions, superstitions and class differences. The scenic beauty, the musical score, the performances, the unexpected plot twists and turns and the mix of reality and fantasy all create a magical experience."
(Amazon member) 'Cesar Silvestre' of Portugal: "There are lots of things that we are not told in the beginning or the middle of this movie. We do not know who the characters are, where they came from or how they started their relationships. And the truth is, we don't need to know these facts. In the end, all we need to acknowledge is that this is a movie about love" in all its diverse and beautiful aspects.
