We are a network of fellow single parents for fun and support within Alexandria (including Alexandria City and the "Alexandria" in Fairfax County). The purpose of the group is to meet others in similar situations and be an outlet for fun and support.
We get together for adult+kids events and adult only events. Whatever it is, it'll be fun, easy, and simple. Our lives are complicated enough so we try to keep everything as simple as possible. :)
The only requirement is that you're a single parent, with children (under 18) and that you'd like to meet other single parents who have children living at home. Ideally, you live in Alexandria as well so you don't have to schlep your kids across town.
Our kids range in ages from 9 months to 19. We try to plan a variety of events that include a wide variety of ages -- playground trips, batting cages, local band concerts and more.
Please note: if you have an event you think would be of interest to our group but are not a single parent, please email an organizer and request to have it posted. We are always looking for great things to do but want to limit the membership of the group to actual single parents.
If you don't have plans for Memorial Day Weekend, join us at a great camp, try some new activities and make some new friends! This is ideal for families with kids ages 4-16; younger kids are welcome, but won't get nearly as much out of what it has to offer.
Camp has tons of staff led activities, including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, archery, ropes course, zip line, sports, campfires, and a square dance. They cook and provide all meals for us in an air conditioned dining hall. There will be dozens of other families besides our group from the DC region and beyond attending camp. Some have been coming to family camp for 40+ years and bring 3 generations and travel as far as NY and FL to attend.
YMCA Camp Letts is primarily a sleep away summer camp, owned and operated by the Washington DC YMCA but they host schools, weddings, corporate groups, and family camps at other times of the year. It is located in Edgewater, MD, roughly 50 miles from Arlington, on an isolated 200 acre peninsula off the Chesapeake Bay. Takes a bit over an hour to get there from Arlington unless you hit traffic.
Adults are $225, kids 4-12 yrs old are $135, and kids 3 and under are free. This includes all meals Friday dinner through Monday brunch, and most activities. It is a great deal for what you get. (A few specialized activities are extra: pony rides, paintball, and waterskiing, everything else is included.)
We have three cabins reserved, and about 15 families coming so far; so we have room for more to join and always enjoy meeting new families. Please contact Toby ([masked]) before reaching out to the camp to learn how to register, or to ask any questions.
Please note: Each cabin has three sleeping rooms, and two bathrooms. I try to pair families by bedtime preferences (nightowls/early risers), and ages and genders of the kids. Ove last Memorial Day weekend, between this group and "Reston Single Parents Group" around 50 friends joined us.
If this would be your first time going and we haven't met before, I like to talk on the phone to ensure you are comfortable sharing the rooms with others and so you know really well what to expect of the weekend. I also start sending group emails to everyone coming a couple weeks ahead of the weekend, so folks can share ideas of what they want to bring, get to know each other more and make other plans.
