In partnership with our sister group, the Toronto Social Group (http://www.torontosocialgroup.com/events/99217532/), welcome to our first 5-pin bowling evening!
Did you know that 5-pin bowling was invented in Toronto about 100 years ago in 1909 and is found only in Canada?
Thomas Ryan, the owner of the Toronto Bowling Centre back in the early 1900's, invented the game in response to complaints from his customers who said that 10-pin bowling balls were too heavy, required too much strenuous effort and chippped their fingernails. So he reduced the size of the ball substantially so it can be held in the palm of your hand, reduced the size of the pins by 25%, reduced the number of pins, and voila.... a much easier game to play!
The 5-pin Bowling Ball
http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/3/3/c/event_194717212.jpegThe standard 5-pin bowling ball is approximately 5" across and weighs 3 to 4 lbs. There are no finger holes since the ball is held in the palm of your hand. Compare this to a 10-pin bowling ball which typically weighs between 8 and 16 lbs and is approximately 9" in diameter.
Bowling
We will be playing 3 games, which will take approximately 2.5 hours. Since this is Meetup and meeting people is the point, as usual, we will be mixing up the teams between games to allow you to meet lots of new people in every game.
Cost
The cost of bowling this evening is $20 per person. This includes 2.5 hours of bowling, bowling shoe rental and all taxes. Pay when you get there.
Children
5-pin bowling is quite suitable for small hands, so children 12 years and older are welcome to join in. Please note that we will finish around 10:30 PM.
