Why did I start this group? Well, let me get right into it! People like to make me out to be an oddball when they find out I'm vegan. A lot of it is because I'm not the stereotypical vegan. There aren't a lot of "brown" vegans in my experience so sometimes I get the side-eye or the oh-so-fun judgmental "jokes." Even some family members are like "Girl, you'd better eat this hamburger and stop playing!" It just does not compute for some folks so a few years ago I joined some other vegan groups for support and camaraderie. However, I didn't feel very included at the few events I went to. It was kind of like moving to a new high school in your senior year and trying to insert yourself into the clique of popular girls who have been "besties" since they were 8. It...is...hard. I wanted to be part of a warm, welcoming, informal group and I wasn't finding that so I said to myself, "Self, just make it happen!" and Sistah Vegan was born. I figured if I became an organizer, I could make sure everyone who came to a group event would feel welcomed and included. I could make sure they weren't feeling like the "intruder" trying to elbow their way into the clique...or worse, like, standing in a corner spending way too much time talking to somebody's pet because the humans won't make an effort to interact with the new person. That's never happened to me, by the way. I just happened to be carrying dog treats that day. ;-)

Sistah Vegan is for others like me: vegans who aren't stereotypical vegans; I'm brown, not stick thin, haaaate seitan, barely tolerate tofu and would kick tempeh in the face if it was a person. I only occasionally wear long flowy skirts and hemp jewelry and am not fundamental in my veganism--as in, I don't think all meat-eaters are evil (wait...let me think about that statement.) ;-)

This group exists for those who want to meet other vegans, wanna-be vegans, and those curious about veganism. For those (like me!) who have great friends and family, but none of whom are vegan and most of whom like to question your veganism...over and over and over again. It can be a lonely place when you're the "only" so this group will be a place for us to support one another in a world that (increasingly less so, I hope) finds veganism weird (although, really, who cares if anyone thinks we're weird?) We will learn and grow and have fun together. I'll be planning vegan dinners, excursions around the island for fun and exploration, vegan cooking classes, events geared toward compassion and wellness and other events in support of one another as we go about our vegan lives. Hope to see you all soon! <br>
