What we're about

*** National Novel Writing Month Announcement ***

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is almost upon us -- as good a time as any to finally get the first draft of that novel you've been intending to write started!

From now until the end of November, we're planning on scheduling at least two special NaNoWriMo-focused sessions a week, split between afternoons and evenings, to help you achieve your goal. So be on the lookout for them on the events calendar.

To sign up for NaNoWriMo, click here (https://nanowrimo.org/). It's free, and will give you access to a bunch of tools, information, community resources to help inspire you and keep you on track.

If you would prefer to set your own goals to better suit your current project, or even you're not planning on participating this year, you're still welcome to sign up for the meetings.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

*** Until further notice, all SDSU&W Meetups will be held virtually. See individual events for specifics.***

Having trouble finishing your manuscript? Starting a term paper? Writing a long overdue love letter? Then this is the group for you! The Sit Down, Shut Up, and Write! Meetup is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity for writers to start, continue, or finish written works.

The Format:

The "Sit Down" part: The first thirty minutes are reserved for introductions, chit-chat, purchasing food and drink, skimming writing books, exchanging ideas, yoga postures, Gregorian chants, or whatever gets you psyched to start writing.

The "Shut Up, and Write" part: We start PROMPTLY after the first thirty minutes and write for one hour.

After the hour has concluded you can keep writing, leave, talk, or do whatever trips your trigger. Please don't disturb or talk to those who are still bent over their laptops working. Likewise, please don't give others the stink-eye if they are talking amongst themselves. Just be considerate and everything should be fine.

The Rules:

RSVP "Yes" if you are coming. If your plans change, change your RSVP to "No." "Yes" doesn't mean "Maybe." If you are unsure, please wait until you are sure before you RSVP "Yes."

Chronic no-show writers will be removed from the group.

"No-show" means 1) you RSVP "Yes" and don't show up or 2) you change your RSVP to "No" less than one hour before start time.

For example, if the Meetup is from 6:30 to 8:00, you must change your RSVP to "No" before 5:30 or you will be marked as a no-show.

Please don't make last-minute cancellations a habit. Only RSVP if you are actually planning on coming so that waiting lists don't form unnecessarily. Habitual last-minute cancelers will be removed from the group.

You will be dropped from the group if you no-show more than once in a twelve month period. If you have a reasonable excuse for missing please email me.

Members who do not attend an event within 18 months of joining SDSU&W will be removed from the group.

If you are late, and we have already begun writing, just sit down, shut up, and start! There is no need to apologize or explain. Your attendance will be noted after the writing hour has concluded.

We won't go so far as to gag you and chain you to your laptop, but during the writing hour, we ban non-writing conversation and minimize even writing-related exchanged.

Reading and surfing the web is also a no-no unless it's just for quick reference checks. Any lengthy researching should come AFTER the hour is up.

This is NOT critique group. If you want to swap manuscripts with someone and garner some feedback, great! But please make those arrangements BEFORE or AFTER the writing hour. Remember, this may be the only hour you (and everyone else) get to write all week.

Please do not bring children or pets. Best to leave Junior and Fido at home so everyone can work relatively distraction-free

The Fees:

There is no fee to attend. That's right! Zero dollars and zero cents, my friends. I, as organizer, will be covering all administrative costs for our Meetups. But you must make a minimum food or drink purchase at venues that require it. And even if they don't, please make a purchase if and when you can to support the proprietors and the staff.

So that's it. No more excuses. No more procrastination. Fire up your laptops and sharpen your pencils. Then join us to sit down, shut up, and write!

Sit Down, Shut Up, and Write! *Online* MONDAY MARATHON SESSION

NOTE: THIS IS A THREE HOUR MARATHON SESSION, BUT YOU ARE STILL WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU CAN ONLY WRITE WITH US FOR THE FIRST HOUR. The Format: 1:00: The online meeting goes live on Zoom. Click the "Online Event" or "Happening Online" link displayed on this page to join us. (If you haven't connected to a Zoom meeting before, see below for further instructions.) 1:00 to 1:20 (The "Sit Down" part): The first twenty minutes is reserved for checking-in, introductions & chit-chat. Please make sure you are calling in from a quiet location. 1:20 to 3:50 (The "Shut Up, and Write" part): We stop talking PROMPTLY at 1:20 and write for 2.5 hours. Simply disconnect from the conference call or mute your connection (and stop your video) if you decide to stay online. DURING THE SESSION: - IF YOU ENTER AFTER THE INTRO PERIOD MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR MICROPHONE MUTED WHEN YOU DO SO. There will be no verbal check-ins once the writing period has started. For the full experience, it is recommended that you arrive at a time when you can take part in one of our check-in times (set at the beginning and end of the session). However, this is not necessary. - You are on your own for taking breaks, and you can come and go for drink refills, bathroom breaks, and standing up and stretching as needed. Once again, however, keep your microphone muted. If you wish to converse or share something with the group, please do so in chat. This keeps a quiet environment for everyone. - If you are concerned about how to manage your time during the session, you might check the "Pomodoro Technique" section below. 3:50 to 4:00: Once the hour has concluded, whether you are flushed with success or you struggled to find your muse, you're welcome to check back into the meeting and let us know how you got on and continue the chit chat. After 4:00: The online meeting will remain live for at least another 20 min. You're welcome to stay online and continue conversing with your fellow writers. Pomodoro Technique: A Pomodoro ('pomo' for short) is a time management technique used for accomplishing tasks and projects that require a large time investment. Work sessions are broken down into small time chunks (typically around 25 min), with short breaks in between (5 min). After completing 3 or 4 of these work sessions, you take a longer break (typically 10-15 min). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykMzzZolhdk If the clock app on your phone has timer presets, you can easily save a short session, short break, and long break preset to help keep you on track. Or, if you prefer, there are some online timers you can use: - https://tomato-timer.com/ - https://pomofocus.io/ Connecting to the Meeting: If you do not have Zoom installed on your chosen device, which can be anything with a camera and microphone (e.g. phone, laptop, or tablet), simply click on the meeting link, and you will be prompted to install the Zoom app. Follow the instructions they give you, and once the app is installed, you should be connected to the meeting automatically. If you fail to connect, try clicking the meeting link again. You can also type in the meeting id using the Zoom website, if necessary. If you want to sign up for a free Zoom account before the meeting, go to https://zoom.us. If you have trouble getting into the meeting, leave a comment in the comments below and we'll try to help.
