While the daily chime of our phones and email accounts may deliver the promise of instant connectivity and offer the convenience of a succinct response, I have never lost sight of both the value and sheer delight of taking the time to pour my thoughts into a letter, especially when hand-written on paper perfectly intended for the recipient (not to mention the flutter of excitement when receiving snail mail). A moment of reflection on a century of rather amazing postal services juxtaposed against an often frenetically paced environment had me thinking that perhaps I should spread my little joy with others.
So I decided to begin the Snail Mail Collective (SMC). We meet twice a month and share two hours hand-writing the letters, thank you notes, and any other correspondence we've been wanting to get to. New to letter-writing and not sure who to write? Talk to us about a wonderful variety of letter-writing campaigns, pen-pal organizations, and more. For specific bi-monthly dates, times, and locations, check out our event calendar.
Guidelines of the Snail Mail Collective: - Bring your own stationary and preferred writing device(s), etc. - Bring your own stamps. The organizer will bring the following stamps for you to buy at face value if you need them: US Forever stamps, US Postcard stamps, International Forever Postcard stamps; please have small bills and/or change. - The SMC affords us a rare, quiet two hours a month to unplug from social networks completely so that we can share our time in hand-writing letters. In that spirit, we try to create a screen-free experience.
Options for Members of the Snail Mail Collective: - Stationary exchange: If, like me, you are a bit of a papyrophile, the idea of a stationary exchange might bring you all sorts of glee! If you care to join the exchange on any given month, simply bring your goods and arrive 10-15 minutes before our scheduled meeting time. - Stamp exchange: For those of a philatelic persuasion, you may desire to bring and exchange postal stamps! If so, join the exchange on any given month by simply bringing your stamps and arriving 10-15 minutes before our scheduled meeting time. - Letter Drop: Members of the SMC will have the option to leave sealed and stamped letters in the designated SMC letter bag at the conclusion of each meeting. The organizer will mail all sealed and stamped letters on Friday before the close of the business day.
