Join Jeff Rudolph as he recounts Endeavour’s epic journey to its new home at the California Science Center and shares the institution’s ambitious plans to create the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, projected to open in 2017.

From Endeavour’s memorable ferry flight from Kennedy Space Center to LAX, to its historic 12-mile voyage through the streets of Inglewood and Los Angeles, this national treasure’s homecoming received global attention and inspired millions of people across the United States and beyond. Endeavour has attracted record-breaking attendance since going on public display on October 30. Attention is now on the creation of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, the largest component of Phase III of the California Science Center’s 25-year Master Plan and the shuttle’s permanent home. With immersive experiences that transport guests beyond Earth’s limits, hands-on exhibits that encourage active learning, and a unique collection of aircraft and spacecraft, the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will be a launch pad for creativity and innovation.

David Knight will cover the journey of Endeavour from the start in Florida to her new home in downtown LA, along with special detail about the move. He will describe the extraordinary effort and access required to pull it off, and how the filming of the process became a major activity in itself. This spectacular series of events was experienced by millions of people throughout California, and in particular, during her track across the cityscape. Working closely with Jeff Rudolph who spearheaded the enormous project, Knight and company were able to chronicle the most complex and witnessed movement of an object through an urban area, in history.

Jeffrey N. Rudolph Biography

Jeff Rudolph is the President and CEO of the California Science Center and the President of the California Science Center Foundation.  He provided the leadership for the planning, design, fundraising and implementation of the California Science Center Master Plan which transformed the California Museum of Science and Industry into the new CaliforniaScienceCenter and created an award-winning Exposition Park Master Plan to guide the redevelopment of ExpositionPark in central Los Angeles.

The California Science Center's first phase opened to the public in February 1998 and immediately received international recognition and public support.   Implementation of the Master Plan for the California Science Center and Exposition Park continued with the completion in 2003 of the Science Center School and Center for Science Learning, an innovative facility combining a kindergarten - 5th grade school developed in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District and a professional development center modeling best practices in science, math and technology.  Phase II of the Science Center, featuring Ecosystems, a unique blend of live habitats and hands-on exhibits, opened March 2010.  Planning and design for Phase III began with the award of the space shuttle Endeavour to the Science Center in April 2011. The space shuttle will be a major feature of the new Air and Space Center that will be the largest component of Phase III. Over $300 million of the estimated $500 million total cost of this multi-phased project has already been committed.

Rudolph received an M.B.A. from Yale University and a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to becoming President and CEO of the California Science Center, he served as its Executive Director and Deputy Director, as the Executive Director of the State of California's Intergovernmental Personnel Act Advisory Board, and as a Program Analyst for the Legislative Budget Committee of the California Legislature.

Rudolph is a Past Chair of the American Association of Museums.  He served as Chair from[masked] and served as Chair of the AAM CEO Search Committee from 2006-2007.  He previously served as a member of the Board of the American Association of Museums and as Vice Chair.  Rudolph is a Past President of the Association of Science-Technology Centers.  He also serves on the Board of the Science Museum Exhibits Collaborative, and has served on the Board of the National Health Science Consortium and Museum Trustees Association Advisory Council of Directors.   He has previously served as Chair of the Western Museums Association Annual Meeting, and as a member of the Board of the California Association of Museums, the Organizing Committee for the World Congress of Science Centers and the National Academy of Science's Defense Reinvestment Advisory Board.

Rudolph serves as a member of the California Council on Science and Technology, and on the Boards for EXPO Center and Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board.  Rudolph is often a featured speaker at Science Center and Museum Conferences worldwide and frequently conducts accreditation reviews and assessments for the American Association of Museums and the Association of Science-Technology Centers.

David Knight Biography

David Knight was involved with both entertainment and technology from an early age: the world's youngest disk jockey at twelve, and qualified for his ham radio license then as well which got him enthused about electronics, and then applied physics, vocationally. He attended UCLA at 16, then went into the exciting high-tech startup arena. He has worked in defense, intelligence, entertainment and telecommunications, lived abroad and participated in formulating and initiating 'innovation strategies' with several governments. In 2004, he joined the original Ansari XPRIZE team that fomented the burgeoning private spaceflight industry. More recently, he jumped into movie production with the making of 'Space Shuttle & The New Pioneers' that chronicles the end of the Shuttle program and the beginnings of the New Space industry. And last year, he became centrally involved with bringing Endeavour to Los Angeles, to include documenting the whole move-process from Kennedy Space Center to the California Science Center, where she can now be visited by the public.

The event will also include an introduction to the Endeavour Institute and Center: The Endeavour Institute and Center was launched 20 years ago while the Endeavour was in orbit (STS-57) and contained many complex student experiments from the California Central Coast. Since that time of inspiration and resultant founding, the Endeavour Center and Institute has served countless thousands of students and teachers of all ages, and continues to be a continual hub of activity with an important STEM focus.
