Useful Metrics for You and Everyone Else

When we, as developers, define our application metrics, we usually define them in what we think are the most important numbers to track, sometimes this makes sense for people looking from the outside but many times it doesn’t. Here we’ll discuss our experience with producing customized visualizations for different teams that wanted to consume our metrics, how they helped triage issues in a large distributed system and how to pick metrics that make sense for most applications, why black box metrics collection is important and how not to get swamped by metrics when building your dashboards.
