This is part 2 of Kelce’s outstanding talk, continuing from last month…

You will learn:

  1. How to choose between patenting and keeping something as a trade secret;

  2. What makes some inventions and know-how good candidates for trade secrets;

  3. What makes some inventions good candidates for patents;

  4. Different quality categories for patents - and what drives their differing expenses;

  5. How to think strategically about protecting your inventions with a limited budget;

  6. Examples of successful and unsuccessful software patenting.

Kelce Wilson is a patent attorney and a certified privacy professional with a practice that includes patents, privacy and data protection law. Kelce spent 13+ years on active duty in the US Air Force, and then 8 years in the Reserves, before retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He worked on some of the most complex and secretive military technologies, including as a white hat hacker (cybersecurity tester), a senior low observable (stealth aircraft) engineer, a software programmer, and as an engineer on radar and radar jammers, cryptography, and satellite control. He has data breach response experience, and has held both large law firm and in-house positions, performing patent prosecution, licensing, and litigation. His education includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona, M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, an M.B.A, and a J.D. from Capital University, along with certifications in CIPP-US and CIPM.
