What is Somatics?

Somatics is a unique approach to movement re-education. Somatic movements are designed to create new neuro-pathways in the brain which improve the quality of movement, and result in better health and vitality. Somatics has been proven to help people with conditions such as bulging or slipped discs, arthritis, scoliosis, kyphosis, carpel tunnel syndrome, etc. Somatics can also help in particularly stubborn cases where other modalities have been tried, but only met with limited success.

Somatic movements are a series of slow, gentle sequences developed by Dr. Thomas Hanna from the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. He discovered by working with hundreds of clients that many health complaints are caused by Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA), a memory loss of how certain muscle groups feel and how to control them. The unending stream of stresses and traumas that we experience in modern society literally keeps our muscles habitually contracted, unable to relax voluntarily, and respond or coordinate properly. Somatic movements retrain our brain to relax these chronically contracted muscles and regain lost function caused by SMA. As a result, the body re-learns healthy movement patterns which, in turn, allow it to heal physically and emotionally. My Story

I still remember the time a few years ago when I was in excruciating pain that made me stop living my life. After trying many holistic therapies with limited results, I found Somatics. Somatics helped me get out of pain and stay out of pain. Now, I can prioritize my life the way I want again. I am a Certified Clinical Somatic Educator trained at Somatics Systems Institute, Northampton MA. I am the only Somatic Educator in Austin and one of two practitioners in Texas.
