This session will cover the role of a music producer, what to look for in terms of personality fit, how to navigate creativity, typical costs of producing a song or album, collaborative music recording/production, how to maximize paid studio time, the pros and cons of doing your own music production, the timeline and tasks of producing an album (pre-production, tracking, overdubbing, mixing, mastering, release and promotion), the contracts and business elements of production, hiring studio musicians, and elements that make for a successful music producer/musician relationship.

Instructor Bio (Solveig)

Solveig Whittle is a music marketing consultant, blogger, coach, and musician. She has published articles on Hypebot, Dotted Music, and in the ASCAP Daily Brief, as well as on her own blog: www.shadesofsolveig.com

She was an instructor for the University of Washington's Professional and Continuing Education nine month Social Media Certificate Program from 2012 to 2016. She was also a guest lecturer on Social Media for Musicians at the Art Institute of Seattle for six years, until it closed.

Several of the working musicians she has coached have gone on to win Grammys, tour across America and overseas, and release numerous albums. Solveig has released four albums herself with both folk rock group Shades of Red and Solveig & Stevie, and has collaborated with and contributed background vocals to albums by musicians who live in Seattle, Texas, and the UK.

Voting NARAS member (Pacific Northwest Chapter). 35 years of production experience with numerous Northwest bands including The Believers (signed to Corazon Records in Europe). TV commercials for Bank of America, Boeing, Microsoft, Rainier Beer and Beacon Plumbing. Taught Audio Engineering at the Art Institute of Seattle.
