To be here and now, and enjoy the present moment is our most important task. - Thich Nhat Hanh ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ABOUT GECKO CREEK WILDERNESS LODGE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Set on 517 hectares of private reserve, a 517 hectare private nature reserve that borders the 80,000 hectare Cederberg Reserve , it’s hardly surprising that Gecko Creek Lodge is Lonely Planet’s “pick of the Cederberg". Offering comfortable twin / double cabins and tents overlooking the valley, a cool Lapa for gathering and cooking as well as a fire warmed open air Boma , salt water swimming pool and stunning setting make this the ideal hub from which to explore the Cederberg. A short distance away is the Olifants River which has the richest variety of endemic fish species of all rivers south of the Zambezi, including the Yellow Fish and Red fin Minnow. The Cederberg Mountains, home to the San Bushmen for thousands of years, is a heritage to these remarkable and gentle peoples. Their rock art (dated to between 300 and 20,000 years old ) combined with the natural surreal rock structures imply this could well be the cradle of man, our greatest ancestors! Land so unspoilt by light that the stars are like 'diamonds on velvet' and one can see a shooting star every 10 minutes. This is the home of the internationally well-known Rooibos Tea and Buchu medicinal plant. This Fynbos region has one of the most intense species and subspecies of plants in the world. An intricate floral kingdom astonishing in its delicate beauty. Populated by the Cape Leopard, Baboon, Antelope, Lynx and 165 bird species including the magnificient Black Eagles. This fully equipped self-catering camp is very private and safe with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Take leisurely walks in the veld or do hikes on the walks around the retreat centre were a wide variety of birds and wildlife can be seen. ---------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT – TRUITJIESKRAAL SACRED HERITAGE SITE ---------------------------------------------------------- On Friday we will be visiting Truitjieskraal in the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve near Krom River – Cost includes the permit fees for this site http://www.climbing.co.za/2013/11/truitjieskraal-areial-view/ Located in Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve east of the rocky Cederberg Wilderness, the newly upgraded Truitjieskraal interpretive trail has been unveiled by CapeNature, while the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve itself has also been listed as a World Heritage Site. In the Greater Cederberg region there are more than 2500 sites with rock art. Truitjieskraal arguably boasts the most impressive of these sandstone formations in the area with rock art dating back to 5000 years ago. To preserve this unique natural and cultural heritage, CapeNature has improved the trail with interpretation which takes visitors on an historical journey through San and Khoekhoe cultures spanning millions of years. Truitjieskraal arguably boasts the most impressive of these sandstone formations in the area with rock art dating back to 5000 years ago. To preserve this unique natural and cultural heritage, CapeNature has improved the trail with interpretation which takes visitors on an historical journey through San and Khoekhoe cultures spanning millions of years CapeNature CEO, Dr Razeena Omar, says: “People have cared for this landscape for thousands of years. The rock art and artefacts left behind by the indigenous people is so valuable and cannot be replaced, so it is vital that we preserve these memories and ensure future generations have access to this unique natural and cultural heritage.” THE ROCK ART ON THE TRAIL IS OF IMMENSE CULTURAL VALUE “On the Truitjieskraal trail, you now will find interesting insights about the lifestyles of people who have lived there, how the landscape formed, how plants and animals contribute to it and how dynamic ecological processes continue to change it,” adds Dr Omar. ===== About Truitjieskraal The trail we will be following - https://www.mapometer.com/walking/route_4414542.html Truitjieskraal is on an old route from the farms in the east to those in the Breekkrans River valley in the west. Stock farmers used it until the mid-twentieth century to move their sheep and goats from winter to summer grazing areas. Truitjie is an abbreviation of the girl’s name Gertuida. It is believed this was an overnight stop along the route named after a shepherd’s wife or girlfriend. Descendants of the San and Khoekhoe live in the Cederberg on farms and mission stations. Many work today in nature conservation and the tourism industry. ===== About Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve Proclaimed as a nature reserve in 2000 and a World Heritage Site in 2014, Matjiesrivier occupies a very special part of the Western Cape. The[masked] hectare nature reserve is located in the transitional zone where fynbos and lowland succulent Karoo vegetation overlap. The diversity of fauna and flora found on the reserve thus offers visitors representations of both biomes. This semi-arid nature reserve also contains some excellent examples of the region’s geological and archaeological heritage, including the imposing Stadsaal cave, rare San rock art depicting elephants, and the newly opened Truitjieskraal interpretive trail. The interpretive trail gives visitors access to over 2 500 rock art paintings. The area's incredible sandstone formations and the beauty of the plants make this reserve an appealing option for a hike without the art. Much of the sand that formed these rock formations comes from rocks eroded by rivers in the area well over 500 million years ago. You will also be able to spot, through a pair of binoculars, the well- known Maltese Cross, a 30-metre high rock formation that rests at the foot of the Sneeuberge, from Truitjieskraal. http://www.climbing.co.za/2013/11/truitjieskraal-areial-view/ ---------------------------------------------------------- Here is a 2min time lapse film of the site filmed by Liesel Kershoffy - https://vimeo.com/169700744 - This is Liesel’s Kershoffy impression of the area. Even if you don’t join the weekend, the film is worth watching. Quite a mouthful for a site which is a very reluctant superstar. Very few people visit Truitjieskraal when in the area. Admittedly there is so much to see when visiting the Cederberg Conservancy -the Stadsaal Caves, the Maltese Cross, the Wolfberg Cracks and Arch, to name a few - but you are seriously missing out on a very important part of the Cederberg when giving Truitjieskraal a miss. Personally, I hope it stays this way. Truitjieskraal is fragile. The sandstone crumbles with every touch and the bushman’s paintings is on the same height as inquisitive hands. The vegetation takes years to recover from man-made foot paths. The less people, the better. 500 Million years ago Truitjieskraal were formed by different coloured sands deposited in shallow seas. Over the years, temperature-, wind- and chemical erosion started to bring Truitjieskraal out of the ground. Differing hardness of the layers rock is the reason for these beautiful rock formations we see today. If you have visited Truitjieskraal before, you would know that it creeps into your soul. It is spiritual, it’s quiet and it demands your respect. Most people whisper as they walk between the rock formations. Truitjieskraal has that effect on you. I first saw Truitjieskraal 5 years ago as a landscape photographer. Later years, when I ventured into video and time lapse, I knew that I had to return to Truitjieskraal. Its beauty begs to be captured on film. And what better medium than time lapse, where the creeping shadows makes you realize how fleeting time is? Over the course of 10 days we carried 30kg’s of gear up and down the slopes of Truitjieskraal, 10 times. We started out each day at 3pm and stayed until 10pm, capturing a sunset scene and then a night scene. I had purposely chosen new moon nights to shoot the milky-way and it was something quite different to experience nights in a place that is eerily quiet. Combined with a necessary blackout on any torch- or even cell phone light for two hours, we endured the darkness by trying to appear brave to each other and keep a conversation going. I am extremely grateful to my sister, Mari, who volunteered her services on this shoot. With all the gear, plus extra clothes, food and water we had to carry, this shoot would have been near impossible for me to do alone. She followed me up and down Truitjieskraal, exploring cliffs, caves and crevices, with a 15kg backpack without complaint. Even when her knees started acting up 5 days into the shoot and although she is frightened of the night and also baboons - which visited us on the very last shoot (see the clip at 00;02;17) - she soldiered on. You are one in a million sis! -- I also want to mention the stellar job Cape Nature did with Truitjieskraal, laying out the footpaths and installing information points along the route this year, making this site so much more informative to visit and experience. I truly hope you enjoy this short film as much as we enjoyed the making of it! ---------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE WOLFBERG CRACKS ---------------------------------------------------------- Approximately 1,2km from Sanddrif, at the foot of Wolfberg, is a parking area under oak trees. This is the start of the walk. The path leading to the cracks is clearly visible. Three cracks can be viewed, of which the first two are easily recognizable. Here is a video of what you might see on route - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj4LfcYxWig ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life ~ Steve Jobs ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are not sure of the level of fitness required or would like to find out more about this adventure or to check for availability and to book on - contact Iain Macdonald on Tel:[masked] or[masked] =================================== This meet-up group forms a combined part my websites http://www.intuitionwalks.com and www.awakening-intuition.com (http://www.awakening-intuitio.com) and the online Facebook section – https://www.facebook.com/groups/intuitionwalks . Over[masked] Body Mind Soul Consciousness Articles, Relationship Advice Articles, On-line movies, E-books, Quotes & Sacred texts are listed. ============================ PLANNED ACTIVITIES & SITES WE WILL VIST ============================ THE CEDERBERG CONSERVANCY. This vast wilderness area, covering almost[masked] ha. The Cederberg is famous for its spectacular rock formations. The best known are the Wolfberg Cracks, Wolfberg Arch, Maltese Cross and Stadsaal Caves. These rocks are composed of sandstone and shale formations of the Cape Supergroup. The formations were deposited between 500 and 345 million years ago. Some formations such as the Bokkeveld Group are rich in marine fossils such as trilobites, brachiopods and crinoids. (Please remember that all fossils are National Monuments, protected by Law, and may not be disturbed or removed). The Cederberg gives its name to the Cederberg Formation, a narrow shale band that is locally referred to as "Die Trap" or in English "The Step", because of its characteristic manner in which it weathers. The harder sandstone and quartzitic formations such as the Peninsula, Nardouw and Witteberg tend to form the higher mountainous areas, while the softer shale formations such as the Bokkeveld and Cederberg form fertile valleys. The Cederberg's spectacular rock formations result from a number of factors including the flat lying nature of the geology, well defined fracture and jointing patterns, chemical composition of the rocks, climatic conditions and time. Accommodation will be in a Fully-equipped self catering cottage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ELEPHANTS ROCK TRAIL & SACRED SAN BUSHMEN SITES ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Within short walking distance from our main camp, the Elephant rock trail and sacred San Bushmen sites with their rock paintings on the Gecko Creek Reserve are certainly worth exploring. The trail also has a stunning meditation spot on route. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- == ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATION Go for either safari tents or wooden cabins, depending on what takes your fancy. The three wooden cabins offer king, double or twin-bed options, each spilling out onto spacious decks with mountain and fynbos vistas second to none. Please that the Cabins are only made up as a King size bed, so best suitable for couples Four sturdy canvas dome-tents with twin beds are set out on a spacious grassed area with equally appealing views. What’s more, you don’t need to bring your crusty old sleeping bag - all beds are made up and ready. Nearby ablutions sport solar-powered hot showers with ample hot water. If you can't resist regaling your traveller's tales and sharing a beer and some grid space with fellow adventurers, there’s a communal thatched cooking and dining lapa, and a large braai lapa. While your vegetarian kebab browns over the coals keep looking skyward, as it's claimed that a shooting star fires across the Cederberg night sky every 15 minutes. Horse riding, fishing, hiking, a scenic plane flip or a visit to nearby caves are only a few of the reasons you’d need to drag yourself away from the lodge’s swimming pool and it’s long views over the valley. Before we forget, Gecko Creek is only for kids over 16 years - great news for couples, bad news for families. All in all, a good spot for some down time in the Cederberg; in fact, in the words of one guest, Gecko Creek is “The best gateway to the Cederberg.” ---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to bring FLASHLIGHTS / towels and food / drink supplies. / Also Battery Lanterns for your Cabin or Tent. / * We don’t allow any form of flame device (includes candles etc ) / * Smoking is heavily restricted to the Lapa, Boma and Swimming Pool ONLY – never while walking around either. What we're about

This is an active group offering Sunday Soulful Nature Walks in Safety around Table Mountain or new trails just outside Cape Town for those who would like to "meetup" with like-minded people. Also on offer are Monthly Group Adventure Activities, Two Yearly Sacred Retreats, Events, Multi Day Hikes & Relaxing Group Weekends Away. These walks are ideal for spiritually minded folk to meet and connect and enjoy a nature experience. “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

As group safety are paramount, we walk at the pace of the slowest person, (without any pressure). There is always an experienced hiker at the rear to assist anyone who is struggling and ensure no-one is left behind. We have first aid kits as well as at least 2 x two-way radios on all the walks to enable communication between leader and the person covering the rear at all times. Average group sizes are between 18 - 35 people - ensuring safety in numbers

Connecting like-minded people in a sense of community who share similar soulful interests out in nature.

A reminder for those who have not been on these Intuition Nature Walks before, the walks are intended to be of such a nature that we are able to slow down and through our senses, experience some of the wonders that nature has to offer. The slowing down creates an opportunity for re-connection within. Not to mention seeing some of Cape Town’s magical spots. Normally 2 hours of the time allocated is set aside for breaks, taking pictures or sharing in great conversations. This "set out" time out offers a great way to meet and connect with like-minded people who share similar interests.

This nature walking group covers a similar distance to other groups, the difference being the extra time allocated to the walk.

I look forward to you joining us. For more info or directions, contact Iain Macdonald on Tel: 072 3272840 or 021 4628004

I have been offering these walks since 2004 and with a subscriber list in Cape Town of over 1500 people, this group offers a great way to meet like-minded people.

I also offer regular monthly full day walks, outside of Cape Town that are suitable for most levels of fitness, to explore some of the trails and spectacular nature spots that one does not normally get to hear about. These full day walks are normally less than two hours from Cape Town.

Throughout the year a number of multiday group hikes are organised for those keen to explore some of the wilderness nature reserves near Cape Town

A favourite and highlight are our group weekends away, with about 3-4 organised through the year. These are normally relaxing, self-catering affordable accommodation, a home away from home. Normally for these weekends the accommodation is the base camp and then various activities are offered in the surrounding area. Some of these have included, canoeing trips, nature walks, star gazing, swimming, great food and soulful conversations.

[PLEASE NOTE:]

This is an update of the joining requirements for future hiking weekends away. You will need to have participated in at least THREE of regular Sunday walks before booking for an event. This requirement does not apply to the Saturday adventures or the Weekend Retreats on offer. So those that are keen to join one of these magical weekends away with like-minded Soulful adventurers, we look forward to seeing you in the mountains sooner rather than later.

This structure / qualifying requirement has been put in place, so that I can gauge your fitness levels and determine whether you will be able to cope with the hike on offer. Your joining in on our regular Sunday walks also enhances the sense of connectedness and community as you will know most of the people going. I will in turn have a chance to meet you and you will get to know what is on offer. The weekends away offer a combination of adventure, soulfulness and relaxation and time out is allocated for quiet time. The time out offers time out to slow down a little to enjoy the views and connect with like-minded people.
